Former energy secretary is NDA 41st Convention keynote speaker
NDA
Stanford Professor and former Department of Energy Secretary Dr. Stephen Chu will be the keynote speaker at next year's 41st Annual Convention at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Feb. 22-25. Dr. Chu's presentation will deal with energy innovation, how the nation's energy research produced groundbreaking technological advances, scientific discoveries, greater energy independence and a culture of leadership and cooperation. From his own experiences at AT&T Bell Labs, Lawrence Berkeley Lawrence National Lab and the Department of Energy, Dr. Chu will discuss the world's energy future and how to shape a work environment that fosters innovation by creating a culture that incites open discussion, personal leadership and a spirit of cooperation.

NDA Industry Council develops quick coupler safety guidance

The National Demolition Association's Industry Council has developed a safe work practice guidance document on quick couplers. Developed by the associate member advisory group to the NDA's Board of Directors, this advisory safety information will be distributed to all NDA members and be part of the newly updated NDAS Demolition Safety Manual. The quick coupler safety material outlines the safe work practices when installing and working with quick couplers for demolition attachments.

Botched German demolition leaves building looking karate-chopped

Something went terribly wrong with a recent building demolition in Hamburg, Germany. The botched dismantling occurred in the Hammerbrook quarter near the city center. A type of mechanical rig was jabbing at the roof of the empty structure to bring it down so a new office structure can move into the site.

California law may cut use of flame retardants in buildings

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a law that may lead to a change in state building standards that would discourage the use of potentially hazardous flame-retardant chemicals. Because of laws passed in the 1970s, the walls of many homes and workplaces built since then contain foam insulation doused with flame retardants.
