Former energy secretary is NDA 41st Convention keynote speaker

Stanford Professor and former Department of Energy Secretary Dr. Stephen Chu will be the keynote speaker at next year's 41st Annual Convention at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Feb. 22-25. Newest version of LEED rating system to launch in November
Construction & Demolition Recycling
U.S. Green Building Council membership voted during the summer of 2013 to adopt the fourth version of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4), the next update to the green building rating system. The final overall vote was 86 percent in favor of adopting LEED v4. This includes 90 percent approval from the user category of the voting body, 77 percent approval from the general interest category and 89 percent approval from the producer category. The minimum overall percentage of votes needed for a passing vote was 66.7 percent.

Petr Hejl is a hobbyist drone photographer. For his latest project, he filmed the demolition of a 200-foot wind turbine in Torrington, Conn. Optiwind, a start-up energy company, built the turbine prototype in 2009, but financial difficulties forced the company to close in 2013, Hejl said.

Los Angeles' most earthquake-vulnerable buildings listed

The 1994 Northridge earthquake near Los Angeles killed 72 people and caused $20 billion in damage. At the time, some city leaders called for a list of all buildings in Los Angeles that could collapse during a major quake. However, it was considered too costly to force building owners to retrofit their properties, so the list was never made. Now, years later, the Los Angeles Times has compiled a list of 1,000 buildings considered potentially at risk in a major earthquake.
