Applications for the NDA's 2014 Environmental Excellence Awards were mailed to every Association member. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients.

These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same. Applications for next year's awards are due at NDA Headquarters in Doylestown, Pa., on Monday, Dec. 16.

NDA Board to meet in Vancouver, Canada, and Gettysburg, Pa.

NDA President Jeff Kroeker — of Kroeker, Inc. in Fresno, Calif. — has selected Vancouver, British Columbia, and Gettysburg, Pa., as sites for 2014 Board Meetings. The summer meeting of the Board of Directors will take place on June 6-7 at the Pan Pacific Hotel on the waterfront in Vancouver. The fall Board Meeting will take place at the historic Gettysburg Hotel in central Pennsylvania on Sept. 26-27. The fall Board of Directors meeting will include a plant tour and visit to Volvo Construction Equipment's Shippensburg North American headquarters on Friday, Sept. 26.

President Kroeker encourages everyone attend these important Association meetings.

NDA's Southern California Chapter plans for 25th Anniversary Celebration

The Southern California Chapter of the National Demolition Association has begun to plan for a gala celebration at their 25th "Silver Anniversary" Golf Tournament at the Pacific Palms Resort in City of Industry, Calif., on Wednesday, June 4, and Thursday, June 6. The So Cal Chapter's annual golf outing attracts people from all over the country and the revenue generated at this event supports the Association's scholarship program.

Leadership Development program at 41st Annual Convention

As part of the NDA's Education Initiative, FMI, one of the nation's leading construction management consulting firms, will be offering a full-day Leadership Development training program at next year’s 41st Annual Convention. The program is designed for project managers, estimators, superintendents, foremen and company owners, anyone who benefits from improving their leadership skills.

The interactive curriculum will include sessions on:
  • Leadership vs. management
  • Managing up and down
  • The leader's world view: who am I as a leader and why does it matter?
  • Time management and purposeful delegation
  • Action planning
The program is designed to provide the attendee with a better understanding of who he/her is as a leader, how that impacts both his/her direct reports and supervisors; and how knowing this will help them be more effective and efficient. The program is limited to 30-35 attendees. The cost for this Leadership Development program is $250. Attendees will receive a discount in their delegate registration for the NDA's 2014 Convention.

Contractors team up in Texas for demolition and implosion of El Paso City Hall

In seconds, 263 pounds of dynamite ignited, bringing down the 34-year-old El Paso City Hall, a 227,000-square-foot, 11-story building plus penthouse in the heart of El Paso City. It was at least the third city hall built during El Paso's history. The decision to demolish the building was made as the city was making way for the new $60 million El Paso Downtown Baseball Stadium, soon to be home to the Triple-A minor league team, the El Paso Chihuahuas, which is scheduled to begin playing there in spring 2014.

Demolition of Schlitz Park brew house is nearing completion

Milwaukee's Schlitz Park renovation is nearing completion. The final phase includes the demolition of the old brew house on W. Galena St. The Schlitz Brewery was built along the Milwaukee River in 1870 and remnants of the beautiful brewery remain as Schlitz Park, a 46-acre office complex. 'Shakers' help engineers develop inexpensive system for testing condition of bridges

Engineering researchers at the University of Arkansas have developed a new and inexpensive system to test the structural condition of short- to medium-span bridges. The system employs a network of tactile transducers — small-scale, inexpensive and off-the-shelf devices that create the sensation of shaking through feedback of low-frequency sound waves. These devices, known as "shakers," are normally used in home entertainment systems and amusement park rides to enhance user experience.

Ohio launches $120 million effort to repair and replace locally owned bridges

Ohio will invest $120 million to repair and replace more than 200 county- and city-owned bridges over the next three years.
