Each year the association awards a number of college scholarships to high school seniors and those continuing their education at the NDA's Annual Convention. The application process is easy. It can be done online. Hard copies of the application forms for the 2013 College Scholarships were forwarded to every Regular Member firm in September. 2012 a big year for OSHA fall protection citations
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration reports that over a third of the total construction deaths in the United States come from falls. The agency has written more citations for violations of its Fall Protection Standard than any other workplace violation. OSHA reports that nearly half of all fatal falls happen at 20 feet or less, and nearly two-thirds are at 30 feet or less. The agency added that most falls occur on roofs, (33 percent), scaffolds (16 percent) and ladders (16 percent). Consequently, the agency has been tightening its fall protection enforcement rules and launched a special fall protection campaign, which is available here.

2013 Environmental Excellence Awards applications available
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Applications for the NDA's 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards will be mailed out to every association member early in July. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients. These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same.

This year's awards will be presented by Environment Committee Chairman Chris Godek of New England Yankee Construction of Milford, Conn., March 25, immediately following President Don Rachel's welcoming address at the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego. Award winners receive two awards, one for their own firm and one to present to the client they did the work for. The NDA's Environment Committee established this program to enlighten our customers, the construction community and the general public to the major role the industry plays in enhancing the quality of life in the towns and cities where we work. Look for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards application forms soon. The applications will also be available online on NDA's website.

All cranes learn how to build from their instincts in the nest. Jason A. Souza learned how to build from his grandfather's crane — the heavy iron version, that is, not the long-legged bird. Souza, owner of American Excavating Contractors Inc. on Cape Cod, learned about the construction of handmade stone walls and the powerful machinery needed to move and pile large stones from his mentor and grandfather George Rapoza, while still a fledgling, just out of the nest, himself. How to brand yourself on a small budget
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is often said you will be judged in the first 10 seconds of meeting someone. Businesses know how important this is, and rely on their brand strategy to convey meaning and impact in the shortest time possible, driven to do this by an Internet society short on time and shorter of attention. Information needs to be direct, clear and of value, and well-designed brands reveal their power when anyone can recognize and remember a product or company by their chosen font, logo or even a half-heard jingle.
