Deadline for 2014 Convention delegate registration approaching
NDA
The deadline to take advantage of a $50 saving on the delegate registration for the NDA's 2014 Annual Convention at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Feb. 22–25,is fast approaching. The NDA's early bird registration fee is $650 until Saturday, Jan. 11. This year's 41st Annual Convention features Former Energy Secretary Stephen Chu as the keynote speaker as well as a session on understanding "Obamacare" and a special Leadership Training Institute. Register early to take advantage of the early bird savings.

Applications for the NDA's 2014 Environmental Excellence Awards were mailed to every Association member. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients.

These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same. Applications for next year's awards are due at NDA Headquarters in Doylestown, Pa., on Monday, Dec. 16.

Leadership Development program at 41st Annual Convention
NDA
As part of the NDA's Education Initiative, FMI, one of the nation's leading construction management consulting firms, will be offering a full-day Leadership Development training program at next year’s 41st Annual Convention. The program is designed for project managers, estimators, superintendents, foremen and company owners, anyone who benefits from improving their leadership skills.

The interactive curriculum will include sessions on:
  • Leadership vs. management
  • Managing up and down
  • The leader's world view: who am I as a leader and why does it matter?
  • Time management and purposeful delegation
  • Action planning
The program is designed to provide the attendee with a better understanding of who he/her is as a leader, how that impacts both his/her direct reports and supervisors; and how knowing this will help them be more effective and efficient. The program is limited to 30-35 attendees. The cost for this Leadership Development program is $250. Attendees will receive a discount in their delegate registration for the NDA's 2014 Convention.

Philadelphia demolition contractors cited by OSHA
Construction & Demolition Recycling
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Griffin Campbell, doing business as Campbell Construction, and Sean Benschop, doing business as S&R Contracting, for safety violations, including three willful per-instance violations, following the June 5 building collapse that killed six people and injured 14. Campbell Construction was demolishing the four-story building known as the Hoagie City building adjacent to the Salvation Army Thrift Store, located at the 2100 block of Market Street in Philadelphia. S&R Contracting was operating the building's interior walls and floors.

Obama urges infrastructure spending to spur US economy

President Barack Obama sought to put aside turmoil with the rollout of the federal health insurance marketplace by focusing on the billions of dollars in public investments he said the U.S. needs to boost the economy. Speaking at the Port of New Orleans, Obama urged Congress to get past partisan battles and pass a budget that increases spending on science, research and education, and upgrades roads, bridges and ports.

Notice policy is key to protecting lien rights

Making sure your company complies with all of the various notice requirements is a difficult, time-consuming, frustrating and a seemingly impossible task. This is especially true when projects are located throughout many different states with many different rules. Since deadlines change state by state, project by project and role by role, it can be impossible for one person to keep a firm grasp on the applicable requirements. No wonder some companies conclude "the juice isn't worth the squeeze" and decide not to create a thorough notice policy, or to let their current notice policy fall into neglect and noncompliance. But this is a mistake.
