NDA

Don’t let another safety contact end badly; too much is at stake.

Landmark Commission to help create task force for historic preservation in Dallas
The Dallas Morning News
Making a business owner wait at least 10 days before taking a wrecking ball to an old downtown building could be one step toward preserving sites that have national historic designation but lack local protection, staff told the Dallas City Council Nov. 18. Council members indicated support during a briefing for moving forward on measures to protect historic buildings in the city, but decided on no definite specifics, saying they would vote on a task force at their next meeting. The Landmark Commission will take the lead on creating the task force, which will create a list of significant buildings and strategies for keeping them intact.

Time-lapse demolition: Watch a hungry excavator feast on an old garage
Curbed
Demolition used to be an exciting process, but not so much anymore. Gone is the era of wildly swinging wrecking balls and unpredictable collapses. These days, excavators gently tickle buildings into submission. Speed up time, however, and the process looks much more primal. This video was taken recently on Charlotte Street in Detroit, where crews demolished two garages in the Arena District.

Green building regulatory trends drive plastics use
By Don Rosato
The construction and operation of buildings has a significant impact on the environment. In the U.S., buildings account for 39 percent of total energy consumption and 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. Buildings also use a tremendous amount of natural resources to construct and operate. Constructing green buildings that consume resources more efficiently has become one of the primary goals in the industry. In turn, this will minimize pollution that can harm renewable natural resources that are crucial to a sustainable future.
