See what Esquire magazine says about this year's NDA Convention Keynote
Esquire
Steven Chu is not a politician. Steven Chu is a scientist. In the early days of his career, at Bell Labs, Chu created atomic traps in which single atoms could be probed, studied, and tinkered with. A few years later, he used lasers to grab and stretch virus DNA, leading to a new understanding of plastics and polymers. Hyper-precise atomic clocks also came along, as well as a shared 1997 Nobel Prize in physics. President Barack Obama named him secretary of energy in 2008. It was a message that science, banished from Washington out of political convenience during the Bush years, would return. And with it came an honesty often missing from policy debates, as when Chu told The Wall Street Journal that to solve global warming, “somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”
