The Environmental Protection Agency has finalized its reinterpretation of guidance on the disposal of building materials contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls to allow for quicker and "more straightforward" disposal of such waste, but an industry group told BNA Nov. 19 the guidance fails to address broader problems with the regulation of PCB cleanups. 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards applications available
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Applications for the NDA's 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards will be mailed out to every association member early in July. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients. These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same.

This year's awards will be presented by Environment Committee Chairman Chris Godek of New England Yankee Construction of Milford, Conn., March 25, immediately following President Don Rachel's welcoming address at the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego. Award winners receive two awards, one for their own firm and one to present to the client they did the work for. The NDA's Environment Committee established this program to enlighten our customers, the construction community and the general public to the major role the industry plays in enhancing the quality of life in the towns and cities where we work. Look for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards application forms soon. The applications will also be available online on NDA's website.

The construction industry shed 2.2 million workers between January 2007 and last year. So now there's an overabundance of them eager for jobs, right? Wrong. Contractors are struggling with shortages of workers as the home-building market comes to life and some commercial sectors strengthen. The crunch is affecting a handful of states, including Texas, Arizona, Iowa and Florida. But it's expected to worsen and spread across the USA over the next few years, building officials say. More

Betting on BIM to field
Constructech    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For years, the primary benefits of BIM (building information modeling) have included things like detecting clashes, better visualization for clients, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) coordination. For the most part, the models have been contained to the office. However, the possibilities for BIM are expanding — particularly as technology is advancing to easily share BIM with the field.
