New York state favors preservation of Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater in Buffalo
The Buffalo News
The state’s historic preservation office has asked the Chautauqua Institution in Buffalo, New York, to back away from a controversial plan to mostly demolish its historic Chautauqua Amphitheater. The request — made in a Dec. 4 letter to the institution’s board president — adds a significant voice to a mounting chorus of critics trying to save the National Historic Landmark structure from the wrecking ball. "This is a big leap forward," said Alicia Berg, a summer resident and member of the ad hoc Committee to Save the Historic Amphitheater. "It’s not just a preservation advocacy group saying it’s not acceptable. It’s the government."
