Monday, Dec. 16: Final day to have your Environmental Excellence Award applications in for consideration

Applications for the NDA's 2014 Environmental Excellence Awards were mailed to every Association member. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients.

These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same. Applications for next year's awards are due at NDA Headquarters in Doylestown, Pa., on Monday, Dec. 16.

Single-family homes are coming down left and right, particularly in Southeast Portland, Ore., where 110 homes have been approved for demolition this year. It's a major concern, and neighbors in established, close-in neighborhoods are demanding change.

Vikings stadium: Minneapolis panel OKs demolition of Star Tribune building

The Minneapolis City Council's Zoning and Planning Committee voted recently to allow the demolition of the Star Tribune's downtown headquarters to move forward. Local developer Ryan Cos. is seeking to raze the building to make way for a nearly two-block public park — part of a massive, $400 million mixed-use development to complement the new Vikings stadium.

Permanent flood fixes in Colorado could take years

A Dec. 1 deadline to reopen 27 flood-battered Colorado highways was tame compared with the years of complex challenges facing road crews charged with making permanent fixes to damage caused by September's historic floods. The magnitude of the task is still being assessed while highway managers consider the types of technological and engineering changes they need to make to keep 485 miles of damaged roadway less vulnerable to mass flooding.

Exploring the use of ceramic materials to prevent corrosion

There are many methods and techniques used for corrosion prevention. They generally include changing the environment, choosing the appropriate metal, monitoring surfaces, altering anodic areas, using chemicals that prevent deterioration and applying protective coatings. Typically these techniques are used for the protection of metal — the material that is most often the focus of corrosion prevention. In sharp contrast to metals, ceramics are less vulnerable to corrosion because their chemical bonds of ceramics are oxidized at the outset, and therefore, corrosion is already present.
