The NDA has launched a new service that puts job seekers who are pursuing positions in the demolition industry and beyond, together with employers and recruiters looking for qualified candidates. The Demolition Career Connection is the latest addition to the NDA website to give association members and site visitors a way to make meaningful connections in the demolition industry, the association says. “While there are sites out there that list jobs of every description, there is none until now that specifically targets those professionals in the demolition industry,” Mike Taylor, NDA executive director, said. Watch out for the early bird!
The Convention Committee of the National Demolition Association has instituted, for the first time, an early bird registration fee for the association's Annual Convention. By registering BEFORE Jan. 13, each registrant can save $50 on the Delegate Registration for the NDA's 39th Annual Convention at the Grand Hyatt on the Riverwalk and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio March 10-13. This is the first time the association has held its Annual Convention, the largest exposition of demolition equipment, products and services in the world, in Texas and the first time the NDA's exhibition hall will be a municipal convention center.
Capitalizing on the event being held in Texas, the Convention Committee has decided on a decidedly Texas theme for next year's show. There will be Cowboy-themed event on Monday evening at San Antonio's Cowboy Dance Hall, which will feature a PBR Rodeo, country-western bands, a mechanical bull-ride, line dancing, a Texas barbeque and armadillo racing among other events. Tuesday evening's event will be casual and feature a Mexican theme with Hispanic dancers, a Mariachi band and Mexican cuisine with a San Antonio flair. The NDA's 25th Silver Anniversary Golf Tournament will be held out at the Hyatt Regency's Hill Country Resort on March 10.

Apply for the NDA's Environmental Excellence Award
Applications for the NDA's second Environmental Excellence Award program were mailed recently to every member of the association. This program, designed to highlight the demolition industry's skill and experience in dealing with challenging environmental issues of their project sites or products developed that protect the environment, had 11 winners in 2011. The program was developed by the association's Environment Committee to promote the NDA's commitment to environmental stewardship as part of its mission. Awards will be presented to this year's winners at the NDA's Annual Meeting on March 13 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention center in San Antonio.

17th Demolition Academy to feature OSHA demolition-specific 10-hour health and safety training
The NDA's 17th Demolition Academy, the organization's safety and management training program scheduled for March 10-11, will feature the association's demolition-specific OSHA 10-hour health and safety training program. The course contains an introduction to OSHA; sections on electrical hazards, fall, caught between and struck by, personal protective equipment, health hazards on a demolition project site, hand and power tool safety, scaffolding, excavation and general demolition project safety awareness. This 10-hour program, presented over two days, provides an OSHA Completion Card.
Courses in Industrial Hygiene 101; Universal Waste Identification, Removal, Packaging and Disposal; and Demolition Project Site Management will also be offered as part of this program.

NDA begins massive membership drive
The Member Services Committee of the National Demolition Association has begun one of the most comprehensive membership retention and recruitment drives in the organization's history. This initiative includes the upgrade of the NDA's Membership Information Kit along with two videos, which explains the benefits of belonging to the association and an introduction to the demolition industry narrated by television and movie star Ed Asner; an extensive membership solicitation using postcards and broadcast emails sent to thousands of potential members involved with the demolition process; and the implementation of a Member-Get-A-Member program to reward existing NDA members that attract potential new members of the organization.

Severely injured demolition worker awarded millions
Christopher Kaye, 57, from England will receive a lump sum plus annual payments for life, his legal team said. Kaye was working on a construction site in Sheffield, England, for a demolition company when he was hit in the face by machinery in October 2008. He was changing the grapple attachment on an excavator when a metal bar sprang out and hit him in the face, knocking him to the ground. More
Crews dismantling iconic Yellow Pages sign in Detroit

A three-story-high Yellow Pages advertising sign that has been part of Detroit's landscape for about five decades is coming down. Removal of the sign atop the former Michigan Bell Building is part of renovations by the Neighborhood Service Organization, a nonprofit human services group.
