Lien waivers: How technology can solve problems you didn't know you had

Lien waivers are an integral part of construction projects in general, and good credit management in particular. Nearly every party furnishing labor or materials has the right to file a mechanics lien in the event of nonpayment, and the top-of-the-chain parties like the property owner and the GC are generally eager to obtain waivers to ensure the property does not become encumbered. Since a mechanics lien encumbrance can create numerous difficulties for these top-of-chain parties, they are highly motivated to finish the without any liens or bond claims being filed.

Detroit high-rise collapses in controlled demolition after 42 years

A Detroit high-rise was reduced to rubble in less than 120 seconds. The 340,000-square-foot North Plaza Building in the suburb of Southfield was demolished in spectacular style on Sunday, reports the Detroit Free Press. Thick smoke hung over the area, where the blighted 17-story edifice had stood for 42 years, following its razing. The honor of bringing the construction crashing down to earth fell to recent Oakland Community College graduate Andrea Wilson.

Demolition contractor offers critical support at site of Houston fire

Following a massive, five-alarm fire that destroyed a $50 million luxury apartment building in Houston, the Houston Fire Department called in a local demolition contractor for critical support. "The Cherry Companies' work at the site of the immense apartment fire in Houston helps illustrate what happens every day in cities around the country as demolition contractors are called upon to provide the equipment, trained personnel and knowledge to assist in a variety of fire situations," said Cheryl Caulfield, IOM, CAE.

West side of Kyle Field at Texas A&M University set for implosion

Residents in College Station, Texas, should expect to hear — and maybe even feel — some rumbling around 8 a.m. Dec. 22. Texas A&M University System officials on Monday announced the detonation time for an implosion of the west side of Kyle Field.The public will be allowed to view the implosion from the east side of the Reed Arena parking lot. The implosion will be broadcast on local channels, as well as through a live stream on the Web.

Construction spending increased in October amid growing public-sector demand for construction and continued modest growth in residential, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said the new spending figures underscore the need for measures to increase the supply of qualified construction workers as firms worry about growing labor shortages.
