Concrete-eating robot 'literally erases buildings'

Omer Haciomeroglu wants to change all that. The student at Sweden's Umea Institute of Design just won gold for his concrete-recycling robot.

Demolition team finally topples giant smokestack

From April 12: VideoBrief A 175-foot tall smokestack in Washington state didn’t go down without a fight. An explosives crew detonated a payload beneath the 1,000-ton-smokestack at the former Peninsula Plywood mill site in Port Angeles, only to have it remain standing, most likely due to some rugged steel bars that were included to keep the thing standing in the first place.

Summary of proposed silica standard for construction
Laborers' Health & Safety Fund Of North America
From Sept. 6: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is proposing a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 50 μg/M3 (micrograms per cubic meter). This is about half the current PEL for general industry and about one-fifth the current PEL for construction. This PEL is the maximum allowable exposure averaged over an eight-hour workday.

Huge chunk of Mississippi hotel comes crashing down

From Jan. 4: The noise was deafening as a huge chunk of the former Riverwalk Plaza Hotel came crashing to the ground. Adamo Demolition crews were using an excavator to gnaw on the east side of the building. The windows on the south side of the building crashed into the pile of debris below.

But in Tokyo, a cheek-by-jowl city with many outdated high-rises and tough recycling and environmental restrictions, Japanese companies are perfecting what might be called stealth demolition.

Training requirements for the revised Hazard Communication Standard
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
From June 7: OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals and published it in the Federal Register in March 2012 (77 FR 17574). Two significant changes contained in the revised standard require the use of new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets, formerly known as, Material Safety Data Sheets.
