For a little more than a year, Borger, Texas, resident Ron Payne has been giving back to a place he loves in small ways. The retired 63-year-old has led guided hikes, worked the cash register, monitored a visitor center, repaired signs and helped out in just about any way he can. A fifth-grader at South Thibodaux Elementary in Thibodaux, La., Alan Robinson said he wants to be an archeologist when he grows up. It’s one of the reasons he said he loves the First Bloom program. "I've learned a lot," Robinson, 11, said. "I've learned about Cheyenne Indians, alligators and plants." Robinson is one of 15 fourth through sixth-graders who have been digging in the dirt and planting indigenous herbs and flowers at Thibodaux's Jean Lafitte National Park and Preserve. It's part of a national project aimed at dragging children from computer and television screens to the outdoors. More

They'll be using a four-year, $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to implement those changes. The grant comes from the federal Recreational Trails Program and is administered by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
