Baton Rouge, La., parks are considered a national model
The Times Picayune via NOLA.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With nearly 200 park sites and facilities covering almost 10 square miles, the East Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission oversees one of the most highly acclaimed and active local park systems in the nation. Known as BREC, the park authority was created by the state Legislature and a local referendum as a special taxing district more than 50 years ago and has grown into one of the more enviable organizations of its kind, thanks in large part to its public financial support through property taxes. Transit, parks sales tax battle heats up
Journal Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Milwaukee County, Wisconsin's sales tax could increase $120 million a year, tripling the current take, under separate proposals before the Legislature aimed at removing parks and transit from the property tax. Legislative approval and a local ordinance change are needed before the higher sales taxes could be implemented. The tradeoff - a higher sales tax in exchange for a cut on property taxes - hits a sour note with opponents. Put simply, they don't trust the government to pass along promised savings. And they question how much more money really might be needed to upgrade parks and transit.

A drawback to urban green spaces
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While city dwellers are always clamoring for more green space, urban parks may not always be as “green” as they seem. A study on urban green space says that the irrigation, fertilizer, mowing and leaf blowing all add up, emitting more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases than the spaces absorb. The study has been accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union. More

Illegal skate park in danger of demolition
The Bellingham Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's up to private fundraising to buy land near Glacier, Wash., and save an illegally built skate park, because Whatcom County doesn't appear interested in buying it for a park. That's the message from a county Parks and Recreation Commission recent meeting, where the landowner, Lynden-area resident Joe King, and skate park proponents discussed, among other possibilities, having the county buy the land for a park.

Steve Stajich, Mirror Contributing Writer says Consider Christmas, with its upbeat music and good tidings for all, especially children. Many responsible adults will use Christmas as an opportunity to teach children about the needs of others less fortunate. Kids will get involved in great charity events, and as a result get a sense of holiday celebration that includes the all-important giving and caring parts. More

Many hands pitch in at parks
Indianapolis Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A year ago, Indianapolis' parks department was staggering under a $125 million backlog in maintenance and capital projects. Several swimming pools suffered from large and chronic leaks. Playgrounds at some parks were worn and outdated. At others, basketball and tennis courts were barely usable. Now, that backlog has been cut by more than half -- to $60 million. It's still a sizable number, but far more manageable. More
