When parks must rely on private money
The New York Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A majestic staircase of granite rises some 30 feet above the Brooklyn, N.Y., edge of the East River, revealing a panorama that sweeps from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Midtown Manhattan. A salt marsh lined in limestone offers a contemplative look at the river as ecosystem. Along paths winding up manufactured hills and ridges are hundreds of trees that outline velvety fields of green. This is Brooklyn Bridge Park, perched atop a ribbon of piers, and already hailed for its design and scope. More

Haze in remote national park may hold big-city air risks
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share
on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
City folks go to Big Bend National Park for the majestic vistas and fresh air, but sometimes the milky haze and lung-burning smog above the vast West Texas upheaval are reminiscent of home. While poor visibility has been a persistent problem at the iconic park, federal regulators say recent medical research shows Big Bend's visitors may not breathe much easier in the desert than in famously smoggy Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. One of the biggest public health crises our country has ever faced is finally getting serious attention. Dallas-area cities see a small windfall in raising fees for parks, permits, recreation centers
Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many North Texas cities have solved budget shortfalls by slashing costs and raising property-tax rates, but in this down economy a number have turned to a subtler tactic: raising discretionary fees. From field rentals to botanical-garden fees, charges for elective public services are on the rise. Such fees generally constitute a sliver of city budgets, which are fueled mainly by sales and property taxes. More

New York State Parks agency's dilemma is a symbol
Albany Times Union    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
So which one will it be? Do they close Grafton State Park in Rensselaer County or Thacher up along Albany County's Helderberg escarpment? Forget how popular both are, or how Grafton Lake in that park serves as the swimming hole for Troy's minority community, or how Thacher provides the great overlook of our region, cherished for generations as a place to show visiting relatives. Everything's beachy at waterfront dog park
Tampa Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Every dog has its day — so why not spend it at the beach? The popular Davis Islands dog park, the city's first with a beach, soon will undergo improvements.
