Surgeon
General urged to push outdoor recreation
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Share
It's not enough to be involved in organized sports. Health experts say unstructured outdoor playtime is essential to children's health. Some 16,000 citizens, more than 200 health and youth-related organizations and the National Wildlife Federation recently petitioned Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin
to make outdoor recreation a priority of her service. More

National park gun
ban to end soon
The Salt Lake Tribune
Share

On Feb. 22, the long-standing ban on guns in national parks and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service-administered wildlife refuges will lift, thanks to an amendment Congress attached last year to a credit-card reform bill. The add-on requires parks and refuges to conform to state gun-carry laws.

$10 ideas suggested by Genesee County, Mich., Parks and Recreation employees added up, totaling $167,000 in savings on fuel, office supplies, electricity, postage, uniforms and telephone charges over the past 10 months.

Online booking eases travel to national parks
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Share

Booking overnight stays at national parks used to be something that had to be done months in advance. But recent upswings in technology, combined with downturns in the economy, have changed things. Because most people have computers at their disposal, travelers have been booking rooms closer to actual travel dates, says Dave Hartvigsen, a vice president at Xanterra, which operates lodges in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Zion, Crater Lake and Death Valley national parks.

Idaho needs its parks
Boise Weekly
Share

All of this talk about closing Idaho parks to balance the state budget is outrageously shortsighted. It's high time for all Idahoans to speak up and let Gov.
C.L. "Butch" Otter and legislators know that gutting the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation is not only wrong, it would crush rural counties and eliminate one of our state's greatest assets.

Skate parks positive for teens
The Coffs Coast Advocate
Share

The popular perception that skateboarders are anti-social vandals has been flipped, with new research showing skate parks are positive environments for adolescents. Griffith University researchers studied teenage boy skaters and found they’re no more
anti-social than their peers. Psychologist Graham Bradley observed Gold Coast skate parks over 20 sessions, and interviewed about 600 people for his year-long study. He found little evidence to suggest skateboarders were in conflict with their families or engaged in anti-social behavior such as vandalism.

The link between sustainability and health care
Triple Pundit

What do initiatives like Let’s
Move! and the Partnership for a Healthier America, the new foundation which boasts First Lady Michelle Obama as its Honorary Chair, have to do with sustainability? Plenty. Just ask Loel Solomon, vice president of Community Health Initiatives at Kaiser Permanente. According to Solomon, efforts like this precisely illustrate how health care is inextricably entwined with environmental stewardship and even broader issues of sustainability.

Environmental groups turn to National Park Service to block N.J., $750M power line project

Having lost their bid to get the state Board of Public Utilities to reject a major North Jersey power line project, opponents of the Susquehanna-Roseland line are turning their sights this week to the National Park Service. Environmental groups and other opponents will speak out at three environmental scoping hearings scheduled in Pennsylvania and Morris County, N.J., hoping to convince federal officials the proposed towers would

Find nature, not just theme parks, in Florida
The Associated Press via ABC News
Share

On a recent, chilly evening, Tamara Lush looked up and saw more stars than she ever had in the Florida sky. She was 45 feet above the ground and her heart was racing. Then, she stepped off her platform into an inky abyss. She could barely see the glimmer of a swamp below. Attached to a harness and a cable, she flew through the forest to the next platform. The hum of the zipline and the occasional night bird were the only sounds in
her ears. This was no Central Florida theme park ride - it was a starlight zipline tour on a ranch south of Orlando.
