Parks, green spaces protect your health
WebMD    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
There is more evidence that living near parks, woods, or other green spaces may improve your mental and physical health. Close proximity to green spaces was associated with less depression, anxiety, and other health problems in a newly published study. The relationship was strongest for children and people with low incomes. The research is not the first to suggest that green spaces help keep people healthy, but it is the first to assess their impact on specific health conditions. MORE

Curing society's disconnect with nature could be as easy as a walk in the woods
National Parks Traveler    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the past four years, since Last Child in the Woods hit bookstores, there has been a greatly heightened concern over how society connects with nature. Across the United States there has been hew and cry from many corners that society is losing not just its comfort in the outdoors, but also its concern for it. A new study indicates that while there should be reason for concern, perhaps the solution is as easy as a walk in the woods. More
Rising costs and media-savvy consumers are dictating changes in the way recreation guides are produced
Athletic Business    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The traditional printed recreation guide has some flaws. By its very nature, it is cumbersome to produce, text-heavy, mostly colorless, difficult to navigate, and expensive to print and mail. Despite these downsides, recreation guides have one tremendous upside: they connect the community to recreation services. More

Legislation to create more parks introduced in House
American Society of Landscape Architects    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New Jersey Congressman Albio Sires recently introduced legislation to create more parks and recreation space in our nation’s urban centers. H.R. 3734, the Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities Act would provide federal grants to states, local governments and community-based non-profit organizations to construct new parks and recreational facilities or rehabilitate existing ones in urban communities. Grant recipients must provide a thirty percent local match and submit a five-year action plan. More
New playground being developed for disabled in Michigan city
The Oakland Press    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The first step toward living a normal life for many disabled children is learning to play, and then to play with able-bodied children. By doing so, the child builds up confidence and lets other children know they are not that different, despite the fact they may use canes or crutches, wear braces, are hearing impaired, blind or get about in a wheelchair. So it is exciting for many of those with disabilities in Waterford Township, Mich., to know another barrier-free playground for children is being developed in the county. More

Grassroots efforts of Ohio city's residents make progress, hopefully break world record
Cleveland Live    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Neighborhood sales, parties, spooky trails and about 50 penny jars placed in various businesses around town are collecting pennies which, lined up end to end, are expected to stretch for 90 miles and will eventually wrap around the track at the North Ridgeville Middle School in North Ridgeville, Ohio. The fundraising schtick will benefit efforts to develop a skate park, a walking trail and a dog park in the city’s center. More

Designing and maintaining trails for today's users
Recreation Management    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Unique" is the word many people use to describe the vision and results of an award-winning trail system proposed by the former mayor of Brookfield, Wis. Without a single dime of taxpayer money or arm-twisted-revenue to support the last six years of an estimated eight-year, 28-mile-long project, some might also call it ingenious. Thanks to forward-thinking and smart negotiations with cell tower companies leasing land in the city's public parks, the leased revenue was directed to a fund dedicated to the future creation and maintenance of a trail system. As the money accrued to pay for various trails, the system has grown and continues to evolve. More

Clemson Newsroom    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A newly established endowment at Clemson University will fund graduate student research on children’s play, creativity on playgrounds and playground safety. The endowment is earmarked for graduate students studying children's play and creativity at Clemson, which focuses on the value of play and the deficit of play activities in modern society. The safety of playground equipment also is scrutinized as more than 46,000 visits to emergency rooms by children under the age of 15 are recorded each year. More
