President tackling kids' obesity, public service on White House lawn
USA Today    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Obama is exercising executive privilege to get youngsters off the couch, and to urge all Americans to volunteer for community service. In a TV spot set to run on Thanksgiving Day, viewers will see New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees zinging a pass to an unseen player. As we look closer, we realize the receiver is actually President Obama. The playing field is the White House lawn. The defender is Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. The 90-second public service announcement is a joint effort between the NFL's Play 60 campaign to fight childhood obesity and the president's United We Serve public-service effort.

The science behind moving smoking bans outside
TIME Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Reflecting on the existing scientific research on second hand smoke exposure outdoors, William Saletan of Slate.com sifts through the most relevant points from two major studies on the subject (the 2006 California Air Resources Board study, and a 2007 study from Stanford). Among the findings: outdoors, second hand smoke levels vary widely and quickly, depend on the individual's distance from a smoker (farther than 6.5 feet or 2 meters, generally reduces exposure to "background" levels), are influenced by how confined the outdoor space is (if there are walls or fences), and the concentration of smokers in a given area. A sporting dilemma
Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It was a plan calling for a major revamp of how city-run recreational programs are delivered and paid for, and it also sought to give the poor greater access to those services. Endorsed by Toronto Mayor David Miller, a major aim of Everybody Gets to Play was nearly doubling the number of people who get subsidies for these programs from 15,000 to 29,000 by 2014. But embedded in the proposal was a financing scheme that called for whopping double-digit increases in fees for recreational permits and programs last year. A backlash from the public ensued and the whole idea got dumped.

How an open space bond helps the New Jersey economy
New Jersey Voices    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Another public bond question was passed in New Jersey – by a 53 percent to 47 percent margin – that keeps the Garden State Preservation Trust alive for a bit longer. The $400 million bond will be allocated to preserve natural lands, refuges, watersheds, and to acquire and improve recreational parks and sports fields; to preserve private farmland by the purchase of development rights; and to acquire homes and properties in flood-prone areas of major rivers and their tributaries.

How a Wisconsin park could become an open-air classroom
The Daily Page    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Kids in the apartment complexes that ring Warner Park in Madison, Wis., could identify bird species, help locate nests, even conduct a biodiversity study. Trish O'Kane, a journalist and educator, says their keen eyesight and hearing make them "natural birders." Beyond that, there could be kiosks calling attention to the park's wildlife, perhaps even a nature center. Says O'Kane, "The possibilities are limitless." Her enthusiasm is infectious, and it's drawing a flock of support for an outdoor classroom at the Madison park. More

Indians return to Alcatraz 40 years later
San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On the night of Nov. 20, 1969, two rented boats filled with activists billing themselves "Indians of All Tribes" pulled ashore on Alcatraz. The lone inhabitant, a caretaker of the island's empty federal prison, offered no resistance beyond a few startled shouts. Recently, a handful of those initial occupiers and their supporters returned in very different circumstances: with the government's blessing, on a ferry that services this outpost of the National Park Service that receives 1.3 million visitors a year.

Musco Sports Lighting
It is common practice to specify the number of sports-lighting fixtures needed on a field rather than the amount of light needed. However, this is like buying a car based on the size of its gas tank rather than its fuel efficiency. The efficiency of sports-lighting reflector systems varies significantly. What you are buying is the quantity and quality of light on the field. More info
