National parks seek to share of profitable science
The Associated Press    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A soon-to-be-implemented policy for scientists who are permitted to conduct research in national parks will give the National Park Service a share of any profits from their work. The policy is expected to go into effect early next year following more than a decade of concern and a lawsuit over "bioprospecting" in Yellowstone National Park. Bioprospecting — a hybrid of the words "biodiversity" and "prospecting" — is the search for organisms that promise scientific breakthroughs in medicine and chemistry. More

Go outside and play!
Vision.org    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a result of his analysis of the available research combined with personal reports culled from interviews and school visits, Richard Louv has developed a compelling argument for shifting our attention—and that of our children—back toward the natural environment. Though perhaps somewhat idealistic, Louv's recommendation does lay the groundwork for a discussion on community planning, the importance of nature in the health and development of children, and the role of adults in influencing children's relationship with nature. In slow economy, recreation revenues fall

Budget cuts hit broad swath of Cal State
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rochelle Corros is passionate when she speaks about her college major: Recreation and leisure studies is not just fun and games, she says with conviction. Graduates run city and state parks, recreation departments, hospital clinics, theaters and cruise lines. They help keep kids off the streets. So the Cal State Dominguez Hills senior was floored by an August letter from administrators telling her that admissions to the program would be suspended and courses slashed as the campus grappled with steep budget reductions. San Jose's Christmas in the Park marks 30th year
San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Christmas in the Park began decades ago when Don Lima put a few displays in front of his mortuary on Willow Street. Through the years, the displays grew and so did the grounds. On Friday, the San Jose tradition — the longest-running free event in downtown — marked its 30th anniversary, with more than 450,000 visitors expected through its Dec. 27 run. To keep it going, the nonprofit event raises nearly $200,000 a year. But it's been a struggle, particularly this year, with the economic meltdown that's led to a 50 percent drop in grants and sponsorships for the event. More

Nonresident pool sign up a success in Rhode Island city
The Providence Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Providence, R.I.'s recreation department has signed up 123 more people for pool memberships, generating nearly $15,000 in new revenues for the program by letting people from other communities have the same recreational benefits as residents. As part of a two-month special, nonresidents pay the same rate as residents for membership to the pool and fitness center, according to North Providence’s recreation director, Lois Barbieri. More

The intersection of culture & ecology in landscape design
Recreation Management Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From large-scale urban park projects meant to unite an entire region to smaller rural park spaces that bring children back to nature, careful attention to landscape design is a common denominator in spaces that function well for their communities. In recent years, landscape architects have turned their focus toward more sustainable designs. These designs adapt the natural landscape for both active and passive recreation. In addition to saving the planet, they help save money for cash-strapped park districts by saving resources and reducing maintenance requirements. Check out these many award-winning park landscape projects that exemplify the best of park design for the benefit of the community and the earth. More

New park drawing national praise
Rapid City Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rapid City, S.D., area mountain bikers, runners and hikers have long known the dense trees and rocky outcrops of Cowboy Hill, a modern-day oasis along a busy city thoroughfare. A nonprofit foundation, working with the city parks department, private business and the biking community, is well on its way to transforming the local secret into a premier outdoor recreation area. The Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park Foundation has invested more than $3 million into buying the 300-acre hogback and developing an eight-mile web of trails. From the top on a clear day, riders can see as far as Harney Peak, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and Bear Butte. The work isn't going unrecognized, either. Men's Journal named Hanson-Larsen the best bike park in the country in its September issue.

For forest kindergartners, class is back to nature, rain or shine
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Schools around the country have been planting gardens and planning ever more elaborate field trips in hopes of reconnecting children with nature. The forest kindergarten at the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs is one of a handful in the United States that are taking that concept to another level: its 23 pupils, ages 3 ½ to 6, spend three hours each day outside regardless of the weather.

Change shadows Rocky Mountain National Park
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Mack hopped out of his government-issue Ford Escape one recent November day and confirmed that a lone wind-toppled tree between campsites at Glacier Basin Campground at Rocky Mountain National Park was a lodgepole pine killed by pine beetles. Mack, natural resources branch chief at Rocky Mountain National Park, pointed to pockets of dead trees amid the lush green lodgepoles uphill of the campground. The pine beetles, he said, are now eating their way into forests on the east side of the park after laying waste to forests on its west side. More
