Conventions go to smaller cities

As companies and associations slowly raise budgets for meetings and conventions, they're giving greater consideration to smaller and less expensive cities that they once might have bypassed for more glamorous locales. According to meeting manager StarCite, the number of bid requests from customers wishing to have events in the top 10 convention markets rose by about 50 percent in the third quarter of 2010 from a year earlier. But such requests were higher for cities that ranked 26 to 50, up 58 percent, and cities ranked 51 to 75 saw an 80 percent increase. More
