Staffing employment grew 4.1 percent in 2012
American Staffing Association
U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 2.9 million temporary and contract workers per day in 2012, up 4.1 percent from 2011, according to data released by the American Staffing Association. In 2012, U.S. staffing firms hired 11.5 million temporary and contract employees over the course of the year.

Job-hunt time shrinks from record high

For 13 million out-of-work Americans, record spells of joblessness are abating. The median duration fell to 16 weeks in January from 25 weeks in June 2010, Labor Department data show. Still, less slack in the labor market will raise demand for temporary staffing companies, said Jeffrey M. Silber, BMO Capital Markets senior analyst in New York.

NYC to be hit hard by sequester: economist

Two months' worth of job gains are about to vanish nationwide, warns a Merrill Lynch economist — and New York City, whose unemployment rate is already at an eye-popping 8.8 percent, will be hit exceptionally hard in this employment carnage as Washington begins to enact a series of controversial spending cuts known as the sequester. "It will set the economy back a few months in the job market," Ethan Harris, co-head of global economics research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told The Post. "The national job market recovery has been modest, and it has been weaker locally in New York."

Saratoga County sees the highest employment gain in New York state

In the past year, Saratoga County saw the highest employment gain in New York state, growth heavily attributed to manufacturing jobs created by computer chip maker GlobalFoundries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the county's employment rate grew by 3.1 percent in 2012.

Justice Department settles immigration-related discrimination claim against Illinois staffing agency

The Justice Department reached an agreement with The Agency Staffing located in West Dundee, Ill., resolving claims that the staffing company violated the anti-discrimination provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The department's investigation concluded that The Agency Staffing applied enhanced employment eligibility procedures to work-authorized non-U.S. citizens that were run through E-Verify. The company did not utilize these additional procedures when it ran U.S. Citizens through E-Verify. Under the settlement agreement, The Agency Staffing will pay $8,400 in civil penalties to the United States, undergo Justice Department training on the anti-discrimination provision of the INA, and be subject to monitoring of its employment eligibility verification practices for a period of three years.
