State Labor Department releases preliminary January 2014 area unemployment rates

The New York State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for January 2014, which are calculated following procedures prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate relies in part on the results of a telephone survey of 3,100 households (out of more than 7 million) in New York State.

Health insurers say state mandate could increase rates

Downstate health insurers are railing against a state proposal to mandate out-of-network coverage, citing potential rate increases as high as 28 percent. Western New York health insurers say the impact won’t be nearly as bad here, where most plans already include out-of-network features and more expansive provider networks — but that doesn’t mean they’re not concerned as well.

Background check firms sign deal on automatic rejections in New York

Get ready to pay overtime to more workers

President Barack Obama is working overtime to give Americans a raise. Congress has balked at his proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, so the president is using his executive power to make more salaried workers eligible for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours a week. On Thursday afternoon, Obama will sign an memorandum directing the Labor Department to revise the so-called "white-collar" exemption to overtime rules established by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
