Why staffing needs to get smarter with suppliers

Staffing businesses are very good at the supply side of supplier-buyer relationships. It’s what they do best: quickly and capably supply talent to their clients (buyers). However, when you flip the equation around and put staffing in the role of buyer, things get a little messy. Staffing firms are excellent at meeting the high expectations of their clients. They have to be. But are they expecting and getting the same from their secondary talent suppliers? Not even close.

Temps make 10 percent less than full-time employees for the same work
Money
There’s bad news for those working as temps or on-call workers—a group of Americans that has grown since the recession. Despite doing equivalent work, so-called “contingent” employees earn about 10.6% less per hour than standard full-time workers, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.

State unemployment rate remains at 6-year low

Since April 2014, New York State’s private sector job count has increased by 126,200, or 1.7 percent. Since the beginning of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration, the state’s economy has added 626,100 private sector jobs and experienced employment growth in 45 of the past 52 months. In April 2015, the state’s private sector job count decreased by 18,300, or 0.2 percent, to 7,736,400. The statewide unemployment rate in New York remained unchanged at 5.7 percent in April 2015, its lowest level since August 2008, according to preliminary figures released by the New York State Department of Labor. New York City’s unemployment rate decreased over the month from 6.6 percent to 6.5 percent.

40 percent of workers now have 'contingent' jobs, says US government

Tucked away in the pages of a new report by the U.S. General Accounting Office is a startling statistic: 40.4 percent of the U.S. workforce is now made up of contingent workers — that is, people who don’t have what we traditionally consider secure jobs. There is currently a lot of debate about how contingent workers should be defined.

Temp agencies find a more permanent role out of recession

After the recession, staffing agencies have come to fill an increasingly important role in the economy as they become extensions of company’s human resource department, handing recruiting and hiring candidates for jobs. Employers, meanwhile, have restructured, relying increasingly on a contingent workforce, one that can be deployed during periods of peak demand, part of their business model. The trend began at the beginning of the recession in 2008 and 2009 when companies began to cut their own employment and took an ax to their human resources department.

Survey finds 40 percent of small businesses to add jobs
Staffing Industry Analysts
Small business owners continue to reflect the optimism seen in January, but plan to add employees and boost compensation levels, according to a business confidence survey released by professional employer organization Insperity Inc.. The survey found 40 percent of responding business owners plan to add employees, down from 50 percent in January but an increase from 31 percent in October’s survey; 52 percent are maintaining current staffing levels, up from 47 percent last quarter; and 8 percent plan layoffs, up from 3 percent in January.
