The contract labor force is growing twice as rapidly as the traditional workforce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also added that this is projected to comprise more than 35 percent of all employees by the end of 2013, with workers in highly skilled occupations still in short supply.

ADP: 135,000 private jobs added in May shows sequester, tax damage

Private companies added 135,000 workers last month, a lower-than-expected figure underscoring that the higher taxes and government cuts may be hurting the labor market. Economists believed the recent report from payroll giant ADP and Moody's Analytics would show businesses increased payrolls by 171,000.

Job outlook not so bleak

To those looking at employment figures released last month by the New York State Department of Labor, the local job market would appear to be bleak. Unemployment in Buffalo Niagara is 7.7 percent and in Rochester it's 7.2 percent. But Western New York staffing agencies tell a different story. They see companies reporting better-than-expected job openings, and many are good-paying positions in middle to upper management.

Even though equal pay for women is a legal right, it is not yet a reality. President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act almost exactly a half-century ago, on June 10, 1963. The very next year Congress passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned sex discrimination at work. Yet today, women still earn less than men. Even more shocking, one study has suggested it will take nearly another 50 years to close the gap completely.
