First quarter staffing employment increases 5.5 percent despite GDP contraction
American Staffing Association
U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.13 million temporary and contract workers per week in the first quarter of 2015, up 5.5 precent from the same period in 2014, according to data released by the American Staffing Association. Despite harsh winter weather, average weekly employment from January through March increased across a majority of industry sectors.

State economy adds 47,400 private sector jobs in May 2015; largest monthly gain since September 2000

In May 2015, New York State’s private sector job count grew by 47,400, or 0.6 percent, to 7,783,800, a record high, according to preliminary figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor. This was the state’s largest monthly private sector job gain since September 2000. Since the beginning of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration, the state’s economy has added 673,500 private sector jobs and experienced employment growth in 46 of the past 53 months. The statewide unemployment rate in New York was unchanged at 5.7 percent in May 2015, remaining at its lowest level since August 2008. New York City’s unemployment rate decreased over the month from 6.5 percent to 6.4 percent.

Companies' median usage of non-employed workers is 16 percent, report says; for some it's half

A joint report from Staffing Industry Analysts and ERE Media noted the median usage of non-employed workers by companies is 16 percent, but for the heaviest users nearly half their talent comes from non-employed workers. The report “Total Talent Management – Towards an Integrated Strategy for the Employed and Non-Employed Workforce,” outlines a new holistic and proactive model for talent acquisition and management in today’s environment where organizations increasingly utilize a wide range of talent types. The most common categories of non-employed workers were temporary workers and independent contractors, consultant, and freelancers.

Screening techniques extend hiring process time, Glassdoor report finds

The time it takes to complete the average interview process has increased globally, taking 3.3 to 3.7 days longer since 2010, according to a report released today by Glassdoor. The process now takes an average of 22.9 days in the US. While there has been little change over the years in most interview techniques, job candidates report a rise in several types of employer screening techniques.

Organizational culture and employer brand are top competitive advantages when recruiting talent

Nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of respondents say organizational culture is the most important recruiting advantage for global organizations, followed by a leading employer brand at 26 percent. According to the survey, companies focusing on offering “higher salaries” and “promoting quickly” alone may not be as competitive when recruiting talent, with responses at 6 percent and 5 percent respectively.
