New York's economy grows by 21,300 jobs and marks 18 straight months of private sector job growth
New York State Department of Labor
New York State’s private sector job count grew by 21,300, or 0.3 percent, in May 2014, according to preliminary figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor. This latest monthly employment gain raised New York State’s private sector job count to 7,568,600, a new all-time high. The state’s unemployment rate held steady at 6.7% in May 2014, remaining at its lowest level since December 2008.

Slight job growth for Buffalo area in May
Buffalo Business First
The May jobs report for the Buffalo-Niagara Falls region showed another uptick, with employment rising 0.7 percent overall, matching the private sector growth rate. The state Department of Labor reported Thursday that the Buffalo area tacked on 3,000 jobs in the private sector last month. Percentage-wise, the sector leaders in Buffalo were educational services (+4.2 percent), professional, scientific, and technical services (+3.9 percent), and retail trade (+2.4 percent). Industries that suffered job losses in the past year involved finance and insurance (-4.3 percent) and financial activities (-3.1 percent).

Rochester region adds jobs in May
Rochester Business Journal
The Rochester economy continues to show improvement, with an increase in May in both private-sector and non-farm jobs, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday. From May 2013 to May 2014 Rochester’s non-farm job count increased by 3,400, or 0.7 percent. The Rochester metro area ranked third in terms of private-sector job growth percentage last month.
