US adds 19,800 temp jobs in June, overall job growth slows
Staffing Industry Analysts
The U.S. had 19,800 more temp jobs in June than May, up from an increase of 17,200 in May based on revised numbers, according to seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, the temp penetration rate in June rose to 2.055 percent from May’s rate of 2.044 percent. The penetration rate reflects temporary help services jobs as a percent of total U.S. nonfarm employment. The US overall added 223,000 nonfarm jobs in June, a decrease from the 254,000 added in May (May’s figure was revised downward from 280,000). Job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, retail trade, financial activities, and in transportation and warehousing.

New overtime rule proposed, staffing firms may benefit
Staffing Industry Analysts
The US Department of Labor will propose extending overtime pay to nearly 5 million workers, President Obama announced yesterday. The proposal guarantees overtime pay to most salaried workers earning less than an estimated $50,440 next year. The current salary threshold — which guarantees overtime for most salaried workers who fall below it — is $23,660, or $455 per week, and only 8 percent of full-time salaried workers fall below it, according to the White House. “While this will add costs for many employers, the possibility that employers may reduce the hours of salaried workers to avoid the 40-hour threshold, may lead to greater demand for temporary workers,” said Fiona Coombe, Staffing Industry Analysts’ director of legal and regulatory research.

The Staffing Stream
Traditional contingent workers have been slow to adopt. Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2014 Temporary Worker Survey revealed that 66 percent of traditional temporary workers have never even heard of online staffing. But here’s the nugget of gold. Among those who have heard of it, a whopping 38 percent are already employed at least occasionally via these platforms. You have to go where the talent is. And if traditional temporary workers are starting to adopt online staffing in large numbers, buyers of staffing services should take this seriously.
