Permanent and temporary hiring to increase in the back half of 2014

CareerBuilder’s Midyear Job Forecast points to sustained job growth in the second half of 2014. Nearly half of U.S. employers plan to add full-time, permanent headcount over the next six months, and one-third plan to hire temporary or contract workers – both improvements over the same period in 2013.

Staffing Industry Analysts
Staffing Industry Analysts released the 2014 U.S. staffing and talent engagement market share report. In a repeat of last year, Allegis Group is the U.S. leader for the eighth year in a row with $8.7 billion in revenue and the top five firms remain unchanged from last year. 124 firms generated more than $100 million in U.S. staffing and talent engagement revenue in 2013. These firms generated a combined $74.1 billion in U.S. staffing and talent engagement revenue, which represents 54.5 percent of the total market.

NYC cracking down on shady employment agencies

The city is cracking down on shady employment agencies that prey on people desperate for work by demanding cash up front for interviews or applications for nonexistent positions, The Post has learned. The Department of Consumer Affairs has fired off 115 subpoenas and has begun investigating 23 employment agencies that allegedly have a history of pulling con jobs.

Social media has by and large been a boon to recruiters and HR professionals. Once upon a time, employers had fairly scant information about the candidates they came across. Resumés reported professional highlights, and employers could glean some small insights into a candidate’s personality via interviews and behavioral assessments. If you were lucky, a professional reference might offer some useful insight into a candidate’s career history. For the most part, candidates were in control of the flow of information: they crafted their resumés; they choose which personal details they were willing to give out; they may have even coached their references (not terribly common, but still a possibility). Social media changed all of this.

Struggling to fill that open position? You're not alone

A declining unemployment rate — now at 6.1 percent — would seem to mean that employers are packing their payrolls with workers. But many businesses say they are having a harder time filling open positions this year than last year, according to a new survey. The poll, conducted by franchise staffing firm Express Employment Professionals, reports that 83 percent of the 115 company's franchises surveyed said that it was "somewhat difficult" or "very difficult" to fill a job opening this year. That's up from 78 percent who reported the same for the survey in 2013.
