State Labor Department releases preliminary June 2015 area unemployment rates

The New York State Department of Labor has released preliminary local area unemployment rates for June 2015. The state’s private sector job count increased by 173,500 from June 2014 to June 2015. In June 2015, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 7,804,200, an all-time high. In addition, between May and June 2015, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.7 percent to 5.5 percent, its lowest level since July 2008.

Survey explores the demise of 9 to 5

A new CareerBuilder survey indicates that, much like flip phones and fax machines, the traditional eight-hour work day may be on its way out. More than 1,000 full-time workers in information technology, financial services, sales, and professional and business services – industries that historically have more traditional work hours – participated in the nationwide study to discuss their habits and attitudes toward the traditional nine-to-five work day. According to the survey, 63 percent of workers in these industries believe “working nine to five” is an outdated concept, and a significant number have a hard time leaving the office mentally. Nearly 1 in 4 (24 percent) check work emails during activities with family and friends.

Gregg Dourgarlan writes: I was wowed by this AVC video about startups and the cities that foster them that Fred Wilson put up. Fred does a great job and so does his interviewer, Andrew Sorkin, of Too Big to Fail fame. If you dig into the video you can see constant references to how access to great people has become the differentiator in what makes a city a great one for startups. This underscores how important staffing companies are to the process of building great cities as well.

What is the on-demand economy that we keep hearing about? Remember when you used to go to Blockbuster to rent a video? Now Netflix delivers that service right to your TV. And Spotify, Pandora and Apple deliver music right to your iPhone, iPad, computer, etc. Need a taxi? Go to an app on your phone, and Uber will use your GPS to deliver one right to you. People want goods and services easily, conveniently and quickly. This is the on-demand economy. Talent is no different.
