States weighing limits on employer credit checks

In September, California became the seventh state whose legislature passed a bill that would limit employers' ability to check the credit reports of people interviewing for jobs unless the information was vital to the job's duties. The bill follows similar legislation already signed into law in Connecticut, Maryland, Hawaii, Illinois, Oregon and Washington. At least 18 other states have introduced similar legislation, according to the National Conference of State Legislators. More
