ASA staffing index hits record high
Staffing Industry Analysts
The American Staffing Association’s index measuring employment in the US staffing industry rose 3.17 percent for the week of Nov. 10 to Nov. 16 compared with the same week last year. The index value rose to 105.84, the highest value since the index’s inception in June 2006.

There is little recruiting competition during December ... so be bold and seize a great opportunity

Between Thanksgiving and the rest of the year, it is mostly a dead period for recruiting. But recruiting leaders should realize that failing to recruit during this period is a huge missed opportunity, simply because the recruiting competition is mostly inactive during this extended period. This lack of competition makes recruiting even more essential for smaller firms and those without a strong employer brand simply because the major firms (with powerful employer brands that are difficult to compete against) are on the sidelines.

OSHA investigates more temp agencies

Eighteen months after OSHA announced the Temporary Worker Initiative (TWI), the inspection numbers show that OSHA has been aggressively investigating temporary worker staffing agencies for compliance with OSHA requirements and citing those agencies when violations are found.

Most employers have difficulty filling 'middle-skills' positions, report reveals

Unfilled “middle-skills” jobs — those that generally require more education or training than a high school diploma but less than a four-year college degree — threaten a company’s ability to grow and compete globally, according to a report released Nov. 17. According to the survey, almost half of all job postings today (47 percent) are for middle-skills jobs. The survey found that 56 percent of HR execs found middle-skills jobs hard to fill. Companies in finance and insurance (68 percent), information and telecommunications (55 percent), and health-care (54 percent) experience the greatest challenges, the report said.

State Labor Department releases preliminary October 2014 area unemployment rates
New York State Department of Labor
The New York State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October 2014. The state’s private sector job count increased by 110,000 from October 2013 to October 2014. In October 2014, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 7,606,700. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 6.2 percent to 6.0 percent in October 2014, its lowest level since October 2008.
