School Counselor Summit update

Dear School Counseling Colleagues,

On April 7-8, 2014, 230 school counselors, counselor educators, school administrators and NYSED professionals gathered for the School Counselor Summit led by NYSED's Office of K-16 Initiatives and Access Programs, in collaboration with NYSSCA, NYACES and NYSACAC. Under the leadership of Stan Hansen, Executive Director and Tracey Johnson, Summit Coordinator (both of the Office of K-16 Initiatives and Access Programs), the School Counselor Summit took place at the Desmond Hotel in Albany, NY. This event was sponsored by NYSSCA, ACT, College Board, CICU, Guidance Direct and CTE. The theme and goal for the gathering was:

"Enhancing Collaborative Leadership for College and Career-Readiness, and Success with School Counselors"

The 230 participants were charged with providing leadership and expertise to develop recommendations that:
  • Address challenges in the existing educational and cultural infrastructure
  • Permeate academic content areas, and
  • Incorporate changes in pedagogical approaches to school counseling services
  • Identify best practices and resources to be considered for guidance and resources for school counselors
Participants considered the following overarching questions through four different lenses:
  • Standards and accountability
  • Curriculum and instructional resource
  • Administrative and community support
  • Professional development
Recommendations generated by participants are being compiled by the Office of K-16 Initiatives and Access Programs and will be presented to the Board of Regents in June. Those recommendations, photos, resources, agendas, expert panelist presentations and much, much more information is available at the Summit Website HERE. New York's early college high school model gains traction in other states

As New York fine-tunes its plan for the early college high schools, the model is gaining momentum in other states. There are 16 public-private partnerships in New York that are developing six-year programs where students will earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree. The programs, known as P-TECH or pathways in technology early college high schools, focus on giving students an edge when competing for high-skill jobs in technology, manufacturing and healthcare.

Poll: More than half of students 'engaged' in school

Students who have teachers who make them "feel excited about the future" and who attend schools that they see as committed to building their individual strengths are 30 times more likely than other students to show other signs of engagement in the classroom — a key predictor of academic success, according to a report released by Gallup Education.

Led by Stanford's 5 percent, top colleges' acceptance rates hit new lows

Deluged by more applications than ever, the most selective colleges are, inevitably, rejecting a vast majority, including legions of students they once would have accepted. Admissions directors at these institutions say that most of the students they turn down are such strong candidates that many are indistinguishable from those who get in.

Schools as allies, not rivals

New York City schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña unveiled a plan to share education practices among schools, a shift away from the competition encouraged under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Fariña, in one of her first initiatives since becoming chancellor in January, said schools with strengths in certain areas would be paired with others to share best practices and to foster collaboration across the country's largest school district.

Study: Math anxiety is linked to genetics
Education Week
Math anxiety can be explained, at least in part, by genetic factors, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. There's been plenty of buzz on the topic of math anxiety over the last few years. Studies have shown it can lead to decreased working memory, low performance, and avoidance of math pursuits. Much of the research on math anxiety's causes has focused on early exposure to negative math experiences.

67 charter schools are left out of Gov. Cuomo's state budget, forcing them to spend thousands on rent

Dozens of city charter schools have been left out of Gov. Cuomo's new state budget, forcing them to pinch pennies while other charters celebrate increased public funding. Cuomo's spending plan, passed by lawmakers March 31, guarantees free space or rent money only for new or expanding charter schools — leaving 67 existing city charters in privately owned buildings out of luck.
