NY STEAM Girls Collaborative Champions Board

NYSSCA is now a member of the NY STEAM Girls Collaborative Champions Board: The NY Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math Girls Collaborative is hosting a Kick Off Conference on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College's TEC-SMART Center located in Malta, New York. The NY STEAM Girls Collaborative brings together organizations throughout New York that are committed to informing and motivating girls to pursue careers in the STEM fields. This conference will be attended by professionals from education, business and government. A limited number of travel scholarships are available. 2014 ESSCP Grant Recipients Announced

The U.S. Department of Education announced the fiscal year 2014 Elementary and Secondary School Counseling program grant recipients. Grantees under this program will use funds to support school counseling programs in target elementary, K-12 or secondary schools. Schools will use the funds to establish or expand counseling programs through hiring qualified school counselors, school social workers, school psychologists, or child and adolescent psychiatrists with a goal of expanding the range, availability, quantity and quality of counseling services. Funds may also be used to support parental involvement, school counselor and other staff professional development and collaboration with community-based organizations that provide mental health and other services to students. Are you curious about other federal funding sources for school counseling services?

Earlier this summer, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent a letter to chief state school officers and local education agencies advising them to use their federal investments wisely. The letter included guidance on federal funds available for school counseling professional development and services. Read the letter and see the list of federal programs that can be used for comprehensive school counseling services and professional development. Please share this information with your building- and district-level supervisors.

Counselors work to get more students on college path

Kristin M. Chiasson and her team of guidance counselors have been ramping up efforts to foster more of a college-going culture at Wayne Memorial High School, near Detroit, where a majority of students would be among the first in their families to pursue higher education. After surveying students to identify their needs in the college process, the school is starting lunchtime help sessions to walk students through the onerous application process and will be rebranding a financial-aid workshop to entice more participants.

Counselors in a crisis: Lessons from Ferguson schools

Administrators at the Ferguson-Florissant School District in suburban St. Louis doubled the number of counselors during the first week of school in late August to help students cope with their emotions during the time of instability following Michael Brown's death, says school board president Rob Chabot. The district's 11,000 students filed into schools nearly two weeks late, after widespread protests and social unrest in the area.

For the fifth consecutive year, U.S. News has factored high school guidance counselors' opinions into ranking the schools in the National Universities and National Liberal Arts Colleges categories of the Best Colleges rankings. With technology taking over in schools, worries rise
The New York Times
At a New York state elementary school, teachers can use a behavior-monitoring app to compile information on which children have positive attitudes and which act out. In Georgia, some high school cafeterias are using a biometric identification system to let students pay for lunch by scanning the palms of their hands at the checkout line. And across the country, school sports teams are using social media sites for athletes to exchange contact information and game locations.

There have been some interesting developments recently in the education sector, especially imparting education in the K-12 levels. The beginning of 2014 saw major predictions being set for the way education will take shape in these times of rapid change and technology. As the 2014-2015 school year begins, we are seeing some of these predictions come true. Tech-driven teaching practices have stormed in and have been consolidated as key teaching tools for most states this year. Another major development has been more student-centric learning and responsibilities.

School bus terrorism: Are we now less prepared?

As multi-hazard approaches to anti-terrorism are crucial for effective approaches, a number of experts are becoming increasingly concerned that the intensive focus on active shooter events is leaving schools, school buses and school-related special events inadequately prepared for terrorism attacks. Firm data demonstrates that at least one insurance carrier recently paid claims relating to emergency room treatment of school employees who have been injured in the past 20 months during active-shooter response training. It is quite evident that millions of dollars are being spent on emergency room bills for this as yet unproven type of training.

Report details 5 keys to using technology to help at-risk students

Written by Linda Darling-Hammond, Molly B. Zielezinski and Shelley Goldman, the report includes a review of the literature studying the impact of technology on at-risk students. Study: Cyberbullying increases as students age

As students' age they are verbally and physically bullied less but cyberbullied more, non-native English speakers are not bullied more often than native English speakers and bullying increases as students' transition from elementary to middle school. Those are among the findings of a wide-ranging paper just released.
