Many of us are looking for the best way to improve safety in the workplace. To that end, we take certain measures to mitigate risk and to control loss. Yet, we often wonder, "Are we taking the right measures?" and "Is it working?" The first step in controlling loss is to be certain that everyone is on the same page. It is vital that you identify and list potential hazards found in your work environment. Once dangers and potential incident areas have been identified, they need to be widely recognized throughout the organization.

It's all about training — Take a look at this spring line-up
For a number of years, our association has been working with members to build professional skills. It started with the Professional Service Managers Academy. Out of that grew the ongoing Train the Trainer Program and, most recently, the new Home Comfort Specialist Academy.

Each chapter is also encouraged to use our partners — whether it is a tech school or a wholesaler that has space or training center. Many of these sessions being offered are doing just that.

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter

Our goal is to develop more local trainers. A great example of integrating technical skills with professional skills is provided by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Most probably know that Ralph Adams is one of our national vice presidents and a co-chair of education. He is one person among many of our members whose main mission is to share the knowledge and build a better heating and air conditioning industry.

The chapter is developing and presenting a series of classes. The first will be held April 17 at Ferguson Heating & Cooling, 3620 Commerce Dr., Suite 705, in Baltimore. This class is tied with our Home Comfort Specialist Academy. This all day class will go from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The first part of the day, Ralph will introduce the overall program and help sales people who want to sell more products and higher efficiency equipment to their customers. This will be a step-by-step process from the first call to making the appointment and looking at the entire home; not just a piece of equipment. Attendees will learn what should be covered while speaking with the homeowner, the operation of the existing system and ways to improve comfort and efficiency.

The afternoon session will be delivered by Field Controls. Tim Begoske will speak about Healthy Home Systems, air cleaners, UV lights, ventilation systems and ways to sell upgrades.

Other in-depth classes being sponsored by the chapter are:
  • April 30 and May 1: Basic Oil Burner Class, R.E. Michel Training Center, 1 Skywater Way, Glen Burnie. Ralph will teach this class.
  • May 6-8: A two-and-a-half-day class on Basic AC Fundamentals at the R.E. Michel Training Center, 1 Skywater Way, in Glen Burnie, Md. This class will be taught by Floyd Wilson, trainer for R.E. Michel.
  • May 13-15: A hands on three-day class on A/C Service. Floyd Wilson will teach this class, also at the R.E. Michel Training Center in Glen Burnie.
Breaking News on the Classic Hydronics Class

A visit to the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, at 4500 Education Park Drive, in Schnecksville, Pa., resulted in a special request to add a tour of their HVAC lab. Anyone going to the seminar presented by Dan Holohan on April 16 can arrive by 4 p.m. and join the tour. You won't be disappointed!

Delaware Valley Chapter Continues to Deliver

The Spring Training session has begun, too, for the Delaware Valley Chapter. They host tech nights monthly and the first one delivered March 5 was on Indoor Air Quality.

This chapter uses their educational subsidy dollars wisely and regularly so that they can keep costs for their students low.

The Southeast PA Chapter announces a Tech Night

The chapter is hosting a tech night, 6 p.m., March 26, at the Sid Harvey Store #038, located at 535A East Ross Street, in Lancaster, Pa. Bruce Graham, from Carlin Combustion Technology, will present a workshop on National and Propane Gas burner installation and service. This will include a live firing display. Low-income heating oil program for New Yorkers continues after death of backer Hugo Chavez
A program that provides home heating oil for low-income New Yorkers is safe for now despite the death of one of its chief backers — former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Around 153,000 U.S. households a year get free heating oil from Houston-based Citgo, which is a subsidiary of Venezuela's state oil company. 75,000 of those are in New York City.

HVAC distributors see biggest monthly sales gain in 2 years
U.S. HVACR average distributor monthly sales reversed course in a big way in January 2013. After a decrease of 1.8 percent in December 2012, average distributor monthly sales gained 19.4 percent in January 2013, according to the Heating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International.

Region racks up big savings in Connecticut energy incentives
The Day
Businesses, towns and residential customers combined to save well over $50 million last year in energy costs, thanks to state incentives that a report said are helping Connecticut take a significant step forward in providing a healthier environment. The report said more than 500,000 state residential customers participated in energy-saving programs last year. Energy audits, rebates and incentives to improve new-home construction were among the state's programs that homeowners and renters utilized.
