The Anthem hacking disaster
Weekly Industry News is writing about the recent Anthem cyberattack. While it is an evolving story, and there may be some updates, this pretty much covers the incident and reaction. For months, cybersecurity experts have warned that the favorite target of hackers is health insurance. Health insurers — experts and the FBI say — have lousy security compared to banks and other firms. And for the last couple of years, the FBI has been warning that an attack like this is coming.

The Google insurance plunge and the PIA antidote
In a recent issue, Weekly Industry News ran a story about Google joining Wal-Mart and some others selling insurance online. The announcement immediately generated predictions from so-called experts. They basically said the independent agency system — already reeling from direct writer competition — will not survive.

The insurance crystal ball: Predicting 2015
We're entering a soft market and 2015 will be a better year for buyers than sellers, according to two reports. The first is from MarketScout, who says the composite rate for property and casualty premiums officially hit flat — zero — in January. To make it a metaphor, the slowing ship engine we saw in the last quarter of 2014 has now evolved into an almost all stop.

Early February seems a bit late to be prognosticating about 2015, but Towers Watson's annual outlook was just released. It's officially titled the "2015 Insurance Industry Outlook" and it asked 365 global insurance executives to rate their concerns for the year.

Recently, the Pineapple Express roared through the Pacific Northwest and drenched huge parts of Northern California. Maybe drenched is a bit mild word. Dumped might be a better term. In some areas, as much as eight-inches of water poured from the sky.

Obamacare: Senate republicans develop alternative; House votes, again, to repeal
Republicans have made it no secret they want to rid the nation of the Affordable Care Act. One of the complaints of Democrats — who still don't want anything repealed — is that Republicans have not proposed an alternative.

Celebrating Valentine's Day
Feb. 14 is Valentine's Day, and the flower and candy industry are cleaning up. One of the staples of the day, and one that we've seen for decades, are those Sweetheart hearts. They come in those little square boxes and have "I love yous" and "you're mines" and other short statements stamped on them.
