Anthem hack: The fallout continues
As more becomes known about the Anthem cyberattack, the scarier it becomes for its 80-plus million current and former customers. Gone are names, birthdays, social security numbers, street addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, medical ID numbers, medical and prescription information, and employment information that includes income.

Anthem is not alone; 40 percent of insurers report breaches
The New York Department of Financial Services recently released a report saying Anthem isn't the only insurance company that has been attacked. However, those that have been attacked have done a better job of protecting data than Anthem.

A new cybersecurity agency; Goodbye passwords?
The Obama administration is creating the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center (CTIIC). It's an agency that the White House says will "connect the dots" between cyber threats. The goal is to share attack information with other "relevant" departments and agencies in close to real time.

Insurance income is up for agencies, down for companies
While companies struggle, Reagan Consulting said agent-broker profitability hit a record 21 percent in 2014. This news comes out of the Reagan Consulting Organic Growth and Profitability (OGP) survey. It has tracked agency profitability since 2008. The survey measures profitability via earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization or EBITDA.

Obamacare: Another push to separate agents from MLR
Oregon Democrat Rep. Kurt Schrader and Missouri Republican Rep. Billy Long — in a bipartisan effort — have introduced a bill in the U.S. House to separate agent and broker commission from the Affordable Care Act's medical loss ratio (MLR). It's something PIA National has been battling since the MLR was announced in the formation of the Affordable Care Act. PIA — and other associations — note the MLR has seriously impacted agent and broker commission.

Most agents say retirement is not anytime soon
Industry trends we've seen lately say many of the older independent agents of the PIA Western Alliance and other older agents will be retiring soon. Weekly Industry News is so sure of that statement that last week we looked at how taxes in the nine PIA Western Alliance states will impact your retirement income. Federal dollars for West Coast quake warning system
President Obama has agreed to put $5 million into next year's budget for an early warning system for West Coast earthquakes. That federal dollars are being funneled to a project like this has California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Congressman Adam Schiff happy. Both have pushed for more federal involvement for a system that could save lives.
