PIA Washington & IIABW's Day at the Capitol
Last week, the PIA Washington teamed up with the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Washington, the Surplus Lines Association of Washington, the Northwest Insurance Council and company sponsors Safeco/Liberty Mutual and Pemco and Stauffacher Communications to present a Day at the Capitol. Several PIA Washington board members — including association president Dale Kelley — attended.

Hacking update: Anthem and Uber details, a multistate investigation
Mid-last week, the FBI said it is close to identifying the group or individuals that hacked into Anthem's data base. The company originally said 80 million customers in the 14 states it operates in are at risk. Information that Anthem released, scaled that down. The hack affected about 27 million customers and noncustomers. Or, at least that's the number at this time.

Insurance hiring on the rise
The Jacobson Group and the Ward Group's Semi-Annual U.S. Insurance Labor Outlook Study has some good news for the industry. In 2015, two-thirds of the companies surveyed said they're going to hire.

Remembering AIG's former CEO and savior Robert Benmosche
Most of the world is focused on the passing of Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy. As the character Spock, Nimoy saved many a fictional world and brought much joy and thought to a generation or two of science fiction fans. He is loved and will be missed. Also passing last week is Robert Benmosche, who saved AIG. Outside of the insurance and financial world, Benmosche is unknown. And truthfully, many in the insurance industry have no idea who he is or what he did.

Work comp rates: How your state ranks
Good news on the workers' compensation insurance front. At $1.85 per $100 of payroll, the median rate in the U.S. fell to an all-time low in 2014. The bad news is if you're in the PIA Western Alliance state of California. It tops the U.S. as the most expensive state for workers' compensation at $3.48 per $100 of payroll.

The 10 largest P&C and personal lines insurers
There aren't many surprises in the Federal Insurance Office's annual report. It's the one required by the FIO's charter and is the report to Congress on which insurers are the biggest, and who is doing the best in terms of market share and income. As an important note, the report tallies the total figures from 2013 and not 2014.

Irony: The Affordable Care Act, the administration and agents
Back in 2010 when the Obama administration and the Department of Health and Human Services were determining how to apply the Affordable Care Act's medical loss ratio agent pleas — like those of PIA National and other agent organizations — to keep them out of the MLR, fell on deaf ears.
