California's 5.1 earthquake: Shaking ground, worried populace
The 5.1 earthquake and resulting aftershocks that recently hit La
Habra, Calif., have geologists and
seismology experts worried — and not worried. Some say
this is just a preview of something bigger to come. While
that's true, shakes like the quake in the Puente Hills, Calif.,
thrust fault are quite common and so are the nearly 100
aftershocks.

Insurance 2013 finances: It wasn't a bad year
Fitch Ratings said there are 48 publicly traded
P&C insurance companies. They stretch across
five insurance subsectors. For them the year-end
financial results for 2013 were outstanding.
Update on Cover Oregon: Nonworking website fix pros, cons
Cover Oregon is the Affordable Care Act's greatest
failure. Oregon's website designed to enroll the uninsured and those with insurance
needing or/and seeking an insurance change is still not working. It is the only state-operated
health insurance website still not working.
Obamacare deadline extended
Those who've kept up with the unfolding unrolling of the
Affordable Care Act are not surprised that the Obama
administration has extended the March 31 deadline to
sign up for the health insurance for those unable to finish
registering by the end of the day. As long as they've tried to
sign up by March 31, they have until mid-April to
complete the process.

Update: Oso, Washington, mudslide
It's an ongoing story. At the time this is written, 21
people have been confirmed dead. Of the 21, six
have not been identified. The list of missing is
down from a couple of hundred to 30.
By the time Weekly Industry News is published,
both lists will likely have changed.
WellPoint: Obamacare double-digit rate raise
It's going to be a
couple of months before we know just how
much insurers are going to raise health insurance rates. That
they'll go up is not a question. All experts agree that the
enrollment of young people in the health insurance exchanges
has not met expectations and it those enrollments that are
designed to pay the higher costs of those that are older.

Time for insurance to adopt 'lean'?
Insurance Networking News
"Lean" methodologies have been part of the manufacturing scene for decades. Ewan Duncan and Ron Ritter, both of McKinsey, recently published a paper that suggests that lean can benefit service-sector industries as well.
As manufacturers have learned to appreciate, lean is about taking the waste out of processes. It's about continuous improvement. It's about using data to measure results. It's about employee empowerment. It's about putting customers first and foremost. While the authors don't specifically call out insurance, there's clearly some benefit the industry can gain from introducing lean principles into business processes. And many of the practices they describe already are unfolding in parts of many insurance companies.
Increase your Facebook reach without paying for advertising
By Mayur Kisani
It is getting harder and harder for businesses on Facebook to reach their audiences. According to Facebook, it is due to the increase in the amount of content, the increasing number of businesses building a presence on the site and an effort to crack down on spam. But many also believe that Facebook has decreased the reach of pages in order to make businesses pay for promoted posts and advertisements, thus increasing revenue for Facebook. So just like everything online, there are a few ways that might help increase your reach on Facebook without having to pay for promoted posts or ads.
