Tell Us Your Story: The Importance of the Independent Insurance Agent
A few years ago Heidi Duncan of Duncan & Associates was the president of PIA Washington/Alaska. In an address to the organization at the annual conference, she talked about growing up an insurance agent's child. She noted all of the times her father helped his clients at fires and auto accidents and in other crises. Heidi called him a superhero.

Arizona Supreme Court Ruling May Expose Agents to Lawsuits

California: Break it up into Six States?
Venture capitalist Tim Draper wants California broken up into six states. Even more interesting is voters will have a chance to say yes or no to the idea. Draper has gathered enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot in November of 2016. Or so says the non-profit group Six Californias.

High Merger Activity & Smaller Insurers
A.M. Best has been studying the recent spate of mergers. In a many worded title typical of the industry — Insurance and Reinsurance Market Conditions Set the Scene for Further Takeover Activity — A.M. Best said there have been 14 major mergers in the last 15-months. The report worries that continued merger activity at this rate will harm the nation's smaller insurers.

Anthem Buys Cigna — Now What?
Anthem just picked up Cigna for $54.2 billion. Earlier reports had the price a bit lower at $48 billion and said Cigna was hesitant to pull the trigger because of the low $184 per share price. A few days later when Anthem upped the ante, Cigna picked up $188 per share and the biggest deal in health insurance history became reality. The trigger was — indeed — pulled.

Wildfires: The New Reality
In the last couple of years Weekly Industry News has done a number of stories on the tinder dry conditions of the West. If you'll pardon the metaphor, wildfires have swept through the nine states of the PIA Western Alliance — Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington — like a flu epidemic. They act almost like a contagion leaping from local area to local area, region to region, state to state.

Washington — OIC Hiring
We received this from the Washington Department of Insurance. The OIC is looking for a Deputy Insurance Commissioner for our Company Supervision Division. This rewarding position manages a wide variety of situations and influences the course of insurance affairs, at the state, national, and international levels through contacts with the regulatory community and through colleagues in the agency. This position works together with the other members of the Executive Management Team to set strategic direction of the agency; establish legislative goals; ensure fiscal responsibility; and, create an inclusive, performance based culture. This is a civil service exempt position.
