PIA National's District Lobbying Day: Why it's important to participate
PIA National's annual District Lobbying Day is Aug. 19. The event has PIA members scheduling meetings with their congressional delegation — that is members of Congress — to discuss issues that are important to professional insurance agents. In other words, issues that are not just important but that are critical to your business. Members of Congress are back home in their districts for the August recess. Many are running for reelection and are actively participating in community activities. Our goal is to mobilize as many of you as possible to have a conversation with them and/or their staff members.

Congress and cybersecurity
For several years, Congress has been working on a way to help the nation's businesses and governments protect themselves from cyberattacks. All past efforts have been controversial and have been opposed by this group or that. Just before the annual August recess, the U.S. House passed one that may get support in the Senate and elsewhere. And — surprise — it did so with a bipartisan effort.

Online auto insurance buying is declining
A few months ago, PIA National's May issue of PIA National Newsline had a story saying Internet auto insurance shopping declined two years in a row. A new report from TransUnion backs that report. The TransUnion Auto Insurance Shopping Index said shopping rates for auto insurance were down about 3 percent in the 12 months ending February compared to the full year ending February 2013. Declines for auto insurance shopping rates also were seen for the full year of 2012 to 2013.

Obama Administration appeals Medicaid ruling
Recently, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals said it is illegal for the federal government to pay for health insurance for those on Medicaid subsidies and whose states do not have an Obamacare exchange. The judges said the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act specifies that only a state exchange has the power to subsidize the insurance purchase. Another court — on the same day — said it is perfectly legal for the Internal Revenue Services to write up regulations that handle the transaction.

How educated do you want your clients to be?
by Curtis M. Pearsall, CPCU, AIAF, CPIA, President, Pearsall Associates Inc. Special Consultant to the Utica National Agents E&O program
Imagine this scenario: A customer calls your agency in a heightened state of anxiety to advise you that he is on vacation and, upon getting back to the room, discovers that the diamond in his wife's ring appears to have fallen out of the setting and is gone. "At least we have insurance on it" are his next words. Fortunately, this story has somewhat of a happy ending, as your agency representative tells the customer that "yes, it was insured and we will go ahead and file the claim." Unfortunately, not all calls like this have a positive outcome.
