US congress divided as federal shutdown
Less than two weeks before a threatened U.S. government shutdown, leaders of the House and Senate have each ruled out the other's demands for a funding extension. America's latest fiscal standoff revolves around funding for President Barack Obama's signature health care law.

PIA National likes NARAB II and simplified licensing
On Sept. 10, the U.S. House passed the National
Association of Registered Agents and Brokers Reform
Act (NARAB II)(H.R. 1155). PIA National likes the passage of NARAB II and favors innovations that streamline
agent and broker licensing as long as they do not undermine the principle of state-based
regulation of insurance.
State regulation of insurance: Jefferson would agree
Ben Nelson is the CEO of the National Association of
Insurance Commissioners. He also had a long
career in the U.S. Senate as a senator from Nebraska.
With all that experience you have to assume that
Nelson knows government.

The TRIA renewal push
The recent 9/11 anniversary got the
Terrorism Risk Insurance Act renewed attention.
PIA National and several industry groups and insurers
are pushing for Congress to renew TRIA before it expires

Small business, Obamacare and employee insurance
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act goes into full
effect — or very close — on Jan. 1. On
Oct. 1, those without insurance will be
required to contact their state's insurance exchange about
getting insurance. They have until Jan. 1 to purchase a
plan or be fined. Small businesses will be heavily impacted by Obamacare and its rules.
Report: Rates and work comp
Commercial insurance prices are continuing their upward
movement and will likely continue to rise in at least the
near future. This from Towers Watson and its
Commercial Lines Insurance Pricing Survey or CLIPS.
It shows prices have jumped 10 quarters in a row.

The push to put off flood rate hikes

and made it official. Prudential Financial joins AIG as insurers
given a designation as being potentially risky to the entire U.S.

MetLife: No to financial system risk designation
MetLife is one of the insurers being targeted by the
Dodd-Frank Act's Financial Stability Oversight Council
as a threat to the entire financial system of the
United States. To date AIG and Prudential Financial are
the only insurers receiving that designation.

Fitch Ratings took a five-year look at the operating
performances of insurers in the 20-largest markets. Statutory
Performance Rankings (2008-2012) looks at underwriting
performance, net profit margin, cash flow, internal capital
formation and return on capital.
A broader approach to reach Generation X
For advisors, the bad news about selling life insurance to Generation X is that this generation, already underinsured, is falling even further behind in terms of coverage. The good news is that Gen X is keenly aware of it.
