Canada launches architecture prize to rival Pritzker
The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and architect Raymond Moriyama have launched a $100,000 award to rival the Pritzker and Stirling Prizes, which will be awarded every two years through an open competition. The $100,000 prize will be one of the biggest in architecture and is open to architects and architectural partnerships from anywhere in the world.

2014 Prix du XXe siècle awarded to Toronto City Hall and the Strutt House

Heritage Canada The National Trust (HCNT), in partnership with Architecture Canada | RAIC, is honouring Toronto City Hall and Civic Square and the Strutt House with the Prix du XXe siècle for their enduring excellence as nationally significant works of architecture. Designed by architects Viljo Revell and John B. Parkin Associates, Toronto City Hall and Civic Square is the result of an international competition, which introduced the influence of the Finnish architect Revell to Canada at a key moment in the city's development.

IBI Group stock shows signs of life amid turnaround efforts

It's a change in direction for IBI, which for years was an eager acquirer of engineering and architecture firms to fuel its growth. The company says it was hit hard by the latest global recession, including its exposure to the U.S. housing sector, as well as cuts to transportation and other infrastructure spending across North America and Europe. About 65 per cent of the company's business is in Canada and the rest is split between the United States and international spots such as Britain and Ireland.

Campus renewal project in Ontario goes a step beyond lean

Architects, construction companies and their clients normally exist in silos, waiting for the other to finish their work. Yet there's a design process that allows the three to work together, but it requires them in a sense to work in reverse. Called integrated project delivery (IPD), it has a growing number of converts, at least judging from the palpable enthusiasm at one design meeting for a new 360-room student residence and academic building at St. Jerome's University.

Williamson Chong Architects named recipient of RAIC's 2014 Emerging Architectural Practice Award

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced the Toronto firm of Williamson Chong as recipient of its 2014 Emerging Architectural Practice Award. "The firm is consistently producing innovative projects that contain quality detailing and craftsmanship including a focus on the use of wood," said the jury.
