Table for 1200 closing party at the RAIC Festival Architecture in Winnipeg a sold-out blinding success

Canadian architecture firm 5468796 Architecture and design advocacy group Storefront Manitoba celebrated the culmination of Winnipeg's Architecture Fringe Festival and the 2014 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's Festival of Architecture by transforming the Étienne Gaboury-designed Esplanade Riel pedestrian bridge (2003) into a giant pop-up dining room and inviting guests to experience and discuss the power of architecture and design.

The City's assertion at various public forums that "Blatchford is not a business-as-usual development" sums up the aspiration of excellence and sustainability objective envisioned for the community.

Lambert receives architecture honour in Venice

Montreal architect and philanthropist Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, was honoured in Venice recently with the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the opening of the 14th International Architecture Fundamentals exhibition. Organizers of the Biennale di Venezia hailed her "huge" contribution to the profession.

Innovative architecture celebrated at Prairie Design Awards

The best designed projects across Canada's prairie provinces were recently honoured during the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's 2014 Festival of Architecture. The Prairie Design Awards were held in conjunction with the opening night ceremonies of the festival at the yet unfinished Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, MB. Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit were handed out in four different categories.

Ivanhoé Cambridge a dévoilé aujourd'hui le résultat des importants travaux effectués au Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, l'un des hôtels emblématiques les plus photographiés dans le monde. Après un investissement initial d'environ 9 million$ en 2011 visant, entre autres, la maçonnerie et le remplacement du toit cuivré de l'immeuble, Ivanhoé Cambridge a alloué un deuxième investissement de 66 million$ au repositionnement de l'hôtel, portant l'investissement total à près de 75 million$.

Museum of History partners again with iconic architect Douglas Cardinal

The Canadian Museum of History is again partnering with its original architect — and honouring him with a room in his name while it's at it. The announcement came on architect Douglas Cardinal's 80th birthday. This year is also a milestone for the museum, marking the 25th anniversary since the doors to the buildings opened in June 1989.

There was no hesitation on Fran Sonshine's part when she was asked by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to help raise money for Canada's first Holocaust monument. The cause is a personal one for Ms. Sonshine, the daughter of two survivors herself. "We grew up with it," said the Toronto resident. "It's now our turn to tell the story." It's been nearly 70 years since the tragedy, during which about 11 million people were murdered.

Architect Jack Diamond behind Montreal musical jewel

Architecture is gold for Oakville student Mitchell Goulart

Mitchell Goulart shows a lot of promise in becoming an architect. The Holy Trinity Secondary School Grade 12 student took home the gold medal for Architectural Technology and Design in the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, which took place at RIM Park in Waterloo. The competition, which is in its 25th year, brought out more than 1,900 of Ontario's top students to compete in various computer and technological competitions and showcase the skills they've been learning in school.

Calgary's 'most luxurious' condo development to be unveiled

A Vancouver developer will unveil next week what it calls Calgary's "most luxurious multi-family residential development" which will be located near the Peace Bridge in the southwest Eau Claire neighbourhood. The Concord, by Concord Pacific, will be located on riverfront property at 6th Street and 1st Avenue S.W. and eventually consist of two condo towers of more than 200 units with prices ranging into the multi-million dollars.

San Diego library a shining star on city's skyline thanks to steel

It took 17 years but the San Diego library has finally arrived at its rightful place on the San Diego skyline. While the core of the building itself is concrete it's the steel and aluminum features which make it shine. The most visible aspect of the library are the eight perforated aluminum sections which act to shade both the intense light and heat of the southern California sun, but the secret to the dome, which shines on the horizon, is the innovative use of steel framing and cabling which holds everything in place.
