CALA program welcomes foreign-trained architects

The 11 provincial and territorial Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA), are pleased to announce the launch of a program called the new Broadly Experienced Foreign Architects Program (BEFA). This program offers experienced foreign-trained architects an alternative path to registration and licensure in Canada. Several years ago, the architectural profession recognized that it did not have an effective national program in place to assess the qualifications of internationally trained and licensed architects. International architect job find in Canada enhanced

Internationally trained architects will be able to more readily find jobs in their fields in Canada as a result of a recently launched federally funded program. The Broadly Experienced Foreign Architects Program (BEFA) will streamline the licensing process for internationally trained architects through a national online assessment tool and standard interview process. Such architects will be able to find out sooner whether their qualifications meet Canadian standards of practice or if they need to undergo further training and skills upgrading. More

Architecture Week offers many free public events that explore the artistry of lighting design. The seven-day festival, organized by the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects, features special lighting installations, daily talks, films, and building tours. "The idea of light goes hand in hand with architecture," says Architecture Week spokesman Richard Smith.  More

The Canadian Centre for Architecture honours the memory of Melvin Charney

Over the course of his career, artist-architect Melvin Charney was involved in many projects that united the fields of art and architecture. His work took both a celebratory and critical perspective of the urban environment. A native of Montreal, Charney studied architecture at McGill and Yale University. Appointed associate professor in 1966, he created and directed the Faculté d’aménagement from 1968 to 1972, and the Unité d’architecture urbaine from 1978 to 1992. More

Construction of Toronto's West Toronto RailPath included using a combination of asphalt, concrete, corten steel and some gravel on its shoulders. Scott Torrance Landscape Architect Inc. and Brown and Storey Architects got a Certificate of Merit from Architecture Canada|RAIC, the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in the Civic Design Project category of the 2012 National Urban Design Awards. Menkes Union Tower hits triple LEED certification

The Menkes Union Tower Inc. at 25 York Street has become Toronto's first LEED EB:O&M Platinum building, and, with LEED CS and CI Gold certifications, one of the few buildings in Canada to achieve triple LEED certification. Jolene McLaughlin, a green buildings project coordinator with Enermodal Engineering, the LEED consultant for the project, said the Menkes Property Management Ltd. team has set 'an excellent example' of providing a comfortable working environment for tenants while using sustainable initiatives to improve daily operations in the building. For the Canadian architecture sector, there are few greater platforms of recognition than the Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. The annual awards program provides a platform for commissioned designed concepts that are either intended to be built, or in the initial stages of construction. With the cut-off date just past, the esteemed jury members, including Williamson Chong architects principal architect Donald Chong, Coarchitecture partner Marie-Chantal Croft and DIALOG's Bruce Haden will now evaluate the designs, focusing on areas of physical organization, form, structure, materials and environmental features. Mobile 3-D printer inspires potential for emergency relief architecture

Dutch firm DUS Architects, in collaboration with Ultimaker Ltd, Fablab Protospace, and Open Coop, have added another 3-D printing machine to the list known as KamerMaker, the room builder. KamerMaker is the world's first mobile 3-D printer and has the ability to print 'rooms' that are up to 11 feet high and 7 feet wide. The machine was unveiled at OFF PICNIC, a precursor to Amsterdam's annual PICNIC technology festival. More
