Thermal envelope design could save 80 per cent on energy costs
DesignBuild Source    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new concept put forth by two Toronto university professors could see energy consumption in homes reduced by up to 80 per cent during cold winter months. Russell Richman of Ryerson's department of architectural science and University of Toronto professor Kim Pressnail have partnered to come up with the idea of Nested Thermal Envelope Design, which heats certain zones in homes. The professors note that space heating is the largest drain on energy in Canada. By dividing a home into separate zones — perimeter and core — and installing a small heating unit that cycles heat back into the home before it can escape, they estimate energy consumption can be cut drastically.
More

With the increased use of glass in buildings, point-supported glass architecture is increasingly becoming the structural and aesthetic option for architects and owners to showcase their projects. At least that is what two representatives of Stella Glass Hardware suggested to a well-attended audience at one of the seminars at the recent Construct Canada show. Working with architects and the fenestration industry, the Vancouver-based firm designs and manufacturers the bolting hardware use to hold structural glass walls, canopies, balustrade systems, interior glass walls, sunshades, and other glass fixtures. The dark mineral clad project marks the entry to the city on a picturesque tree lined riverside site. The volumetric concept of the project is based on a simple extruded rectangular tube that is folded twice. Absolute Towers / MAD Architects

Throughout the process of urbanization, skyscrapers have been symbols of technological bravado, prime capitals and the societal projections of wealth and prosperity. This limited framework for skyscrapers often results in solutions limited by homogenous, linear structures and degenerative duplication in business districts across the globe. Forced into an unnatural state of conformity, metropolitan life is negatively affected by these unchecked, efficiency-centric development practices. Without a challenge to the status quo, our cities will continue to lack the cohesion of life as implied by the term: forest. A forest is a thriving ecosystem wherein every organism survives only in a state of symbiosis. New ambitions nurtured in a changing global consciousness challenge the aging pattern of last century's development and favor fresh thoughtful, inspiring and eloquent solutions for tomorrow's high-rises.
