ACO model boosts quality metrics, but savings harder to achieve

Institutions participating in the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services Physician Group Demonstration Project have not demonstrated a substantial reduction in imaging that could be directly attributed to the Accountable Care Organization, according to an article published online in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. However, the article also contends that incentive-based methodology seems to successfully increase compliance for measuring quality metrics.

CMS issues 2014 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule
On Nov. 27, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule for calendar year 2014 and related CMS commentary. In addition to updating payment rates under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and the Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule, the Final Rule revises various Medicare Part B payment policies.

Reactions mixed to announced meaningful use changes

A new proposed timeline for the meaningful use incentive program for electronic health record use was announced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. The change came with mixed reaction from many healthcare member organizations advocating for more flexibility in the incentive program. It was also met with some initial confusion over what the revised timeline means.
