Changing the texture of plastics on demand
Gizmag
Share

Imagine a pair of rubber gloves whose surface texture could be altered on demand to provide more grip for climbing. Or maybe gloves with "fingerprints" that can be changed in the blink of an eye. They are just a couple of the many potential applications envisioned by researchers at Duke University for a process they have developed that allows the texture of plastics to be changed at will.

Toward more durable carbon fiber composites
SPE Plastics Research Online
Share

Fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites are exposed to damaging environmental factors such as moisture, UV radiation, and thermal cycling in numerous applications. Surprisingly, hygrothermal exposure causes higher levels of degradation to fluorinated epoxy-based microcomposites, despite lower moisture absorption, than their nonfluorinated epoxy counterparts.

Characterization of metallocene polyethylenes for sealing layer applications
SPE Plastics Research Online
Share

The development of metallocene and other single-site catalysts enabled a new generation of linear low-density polyethylene resins with very low density and narrow molecular weight distribution. The copolymers produced using such metallocene single-site catalysts usually show lower density and melting point in comparison to conventional LLDPEs. Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chain branching, and melting behavior of metallocene polyethylenes play a crucial role in the sealability and hot tack properties of their films.

Startup converts plastic to oil, and finds a niche
WBUR-Radio
Share

Only 7 percent of plastic waste in the United States is recycled each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. A startup company in Niagara Falls, N.Y., says it can increase that amount and reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil at the same time. It all starts with a machine known as the Plastic-Eating Monster. Thousands of pounds of shredded milk jugs, water bottles and grocery bags tumble into a large tank, where they're melted together and vaporized.

Plastic skull gives patients a head start
Plastics & Rubber Weekly
Share

Specialist physicians are developing a next generation treatment for head trauma — a special skull prosthesis made of plastic. The process aims to help people who suffer life-threatening injuries inflicted during car accidents. Using laser sintering, customized cranial implants can be produced to cover only the affected areas of the skull.

Polymer power drives tiny reactions
Science News
Share

In the quest to wring energy from every source imaginable, scientists are putting the squeeze on a common plastic ingredient. Applying force to polymers in water generates enough energy to drive chemical reactions. The technique won't replace large-scale energy operations, but it offers a way to harness the wisps of unused energy generated by everyday endeavors, like walking or compacting plastic bags at a recycling center.

Apple wants to improve bonding of plastic and metal in building new iPhones
Apple Insider
Share

Rather than use unreliable adhesives, Apple is exploring new ways to permanently bond plastic and metal parts to build better portable devices like the iPhone. The concept was revealed in a new patent application entitled "Ultrasonic Bonding of Discrete Plastic Parts to Metal." It describes melting a portion of a plastic component onto a rough metallic surface, allowing the two to permanently fuse.

Cochlear implants using molded polyethylene and elastomers such as silicone are now well proven as a successful treatment for severe to profound hearing loss. They first debuted more than 30 years ago, and designs have increasingly leveraged micro molding capabilities. In a new development, Envoy Medical Corp. in St. Paul, Minn., has developed what it describes as the industry's first totally implantable hearing system for moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss.

Shell picks Pittsburgh area for petrochemical refinery
WREM-Radio
Share

The so-called ethane cracking, or "cracker," plant would convert ethane from bountiful Marcellus Shale natural gas liquids into more profitable chemicals such as ethylene, which are then used to produce everything from plastics to tires to antifreeze. Shell Oil Co. has chosen a site near Pittsburgh for a major, multibillion-dollar petrochemical refinery that could provide a huge economic boost to the region.

Low-power upconversion in dye-doped polymer nanoparticles
Materials Views
Share

The design of new materials capable of transducing various energy types into useful signals is one of the most exciting tasks for materials chemists. Systems that modulate light either by down- (Stokes shift) or up-conversion (anti-Stokes shift) without any additional energy are very useful tools. In particular, light-upconverting materials bear numerous promises in fields as varied as solar harvesting and bioimaging.

Nanotechnology Braille display makes Web accessible to the blind
Nanowerk News
Share

If you are a blind computer user you have to rely on electronic Braille displays which typically allow you to see only one line at a time, no matter what you were doing. In order to develop a more functional and affordable tool that would allow the blind to interface with their computers, scientists are working to develop sheet-type, refreshable Braille displays. A group of researchers in Japan has previously reported such full-page Braille displays by integrating organic thin-film transistors and soft polymer actuators.
