DSM sees big future in regenerative medicine, resorbable plastics
Plastics Today
Share

DSM, the Dutch plastics giant, is making a $360 million bet that biomaterials and regenerative medicine will play an important role in future medical care. The acquisition continues a trend at DSM away from commodities and toward specialties, particularly in the life sciences. Kensey Nash Corp. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement in which DSM will acquire all of its stock for $38.50 per share in cash.

Fine-tuning nanotech to target cancer
Mashable
Share

For more than a decade, researchers have been trying to develop nanoparticles that would deliver drugs more effectively and safely. The idea is that a nanoparticle containing a drug compound could selectively target tumor cells or otherwise diseased cells, and avoid healthy ones. Antibodies or other molecules can be attached to the nanoparticle and used to precisely identify target cells.

Scientists develop composite material to enhance device response time
Engadget
Share

By combining polymer semiconductors and small molecules into a composite material to make organic thin-film transistors — a process known as composite collaboration — researchers have found a way to increase the speed of the electrical charge moving through a device's components. The end result could someday be a smartphone that reacts to your touch much more quickly than your current handset.

Researchers develop new asphalt blends using nanoclays
AZoNano
Share

In a paper titled "Nanoclay-Modified Asphalt Materials: Preparation and Characterization," Zhanping You, an associate professor at Michigan Technological University, has reviewed the effect of nanomaterials in the preparation and characterization of asphalt. The paper also discusses new inventions of You's group that demonstrate that nanoclay-modified asphalt materials can be used to build safer and longer-lasting roadways. These new asphalt blends are capable of preventing potholes, rutting and cracks.

Carbon nanotubes: A new wonder material
The Guardian
Share

What are carbon nanotubes exactly? As the name suggests they are tubes that have one or even multiple walls. Their diameter is more than 50,000 times smaller than that of a human hair. Carbon nanotubes are very good conductors for heat and electrical currents. This makes them interesting for computer companies, because it is theoretically possible to create transistors out of this material that are 10 times smaller than the smallest transistors used today.

The key to lower Ultrabook prices? Plastics
ZDNet
Share

With laptop manufacturers struggling to keep costs down as they try to emulate the MacBook Air with Ultrabooks, they may have figured out one way to shave dollars off the price. Intel's Taiwan chief believes Ultrabook pricing could fall as low as $599 later this year — though $699 might be a more popular "sweet spot" — in part because vendors will move away from sleek metal chassis and toward plastic-based ones.
