Trade shows making use of 3-D printing for models
By Renee Eaton
Exhibiting at trade shows can be quite rewarding for companies. Unfortunately, it can also be quite expensive and stressful. Transporting and staging large equipment can consume a significant portion of a company's marketing budget, especially when international shipping is involved. But businesses are starting to adopt 3-D printing techniques to get to-scale, full-color prototypes and models of their products that can easily be carried to and displayed on site for far less cost.

Screw speed and nanocomposite rheology
SPE Plastics Research
Co-rotating twin-screw extruders have become increasingly popular as a way of processing nanocomposites. They offer the opportunity to incorporate different construction elements into the screw, changing the residence time and also shear, which may reach high levels. Shear provides up to 80 percent of the heat required to melt the polymer during polymer processing and is thus one of the most important features of the mixing process.

Biobased plastics drive interest in China, but face hurdles
Plastics News
While biobased plastics account for less than 1 percent of the plastics resin sector, the 20 percent annual growth rate has some industry folk are abuzz.
At the China International Biobased Technology and Partnering Conference, held in Shanghai, speakers and participants expressed optimism about the industry's future, while acknowledging they face major challenges.

Faster start-up times, lower energy use and thinner starting gauges result in better parts and significant cost savings for thermoformers. By using syntactic foam instead of cheap materials, processors can profit while customers enjoy better performance. Read the case study to learn why a total cost of ownership approach improves the bottom line.

PVC recycling on the rise in Europe
Plastics News
PVC recycling in Europe climbed more than 20 percent in 2013 according
to new figures from Recovinyl, the PVC industry's recycling
organization.
A total of 435,083 metric tons of waste PVC was recycled through
Recovinyl across the group's 16 member countries. That is up from
354,173 metric tons in 2012.

Wind energy applications — the promising road forward
By Don Rosato
Wind energy continues to provide major growth opportunities for plastic composites — the industry will reach $4 billion by the end of 2014. The adoption of larger-scale turbines and the expansion of offshore installations that call for stiffer and lighter blades are important to the use of lightweight, strength-to-weight plastic composites.

Tool helps companies choose safer plastics
Environmental Leader
By switching the plastic used in its IV bags, Dignity Health care system kept 700,000 pounds of high-concern chemicals out of the environment, according to a new analysis that measures the "chemical footprint" of plastics. The Plastics Scorecard v.1.0, produced by the Business-NGO Working Group, a collaboration of companies and NGOs, offers what it says is the first comprehensive method for assessing and reducing chemicals of high concern in plastics. It's a tool to help companies choose safer plastics, BizNGO says.
Polymer-based graphene substitute is easy to mass-produce
Gizmag
For all the attention graphene gets thanks to its impressive list of properties, how many of us have actually encountered it in anything other than its raw graphite form? Show of hands. No-one? That's because it is still difficult to mass-produce without introducing defects. Now, a team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology has developed a graphene substitute from plastic that offers the benefits of graphene for use in solar cells and semiconductor chips, but is easy to mass-produce.

New technology helps reduce the amount of PET in Mrs. Dash packaging
Plastics Today
The Mrs. Dash bottles have undergone quite a makeover, but you might not notice it right away.
A new packaging technology reduced the weight of a Mrs. Dash bottle by more than 25 percent. This in turn saves the brand B&G Foods, the owner of Mrs. Dash, an excess of 200,000 pounds of PET resin, along with a double-digit profit percentage.
'Nanojuice' could improve how doctors examine the gut
Phys.Org
Located deep in the human gut, the small intestine is not easy to examine. X-rays, MRIs and ultrasound images provide snapshots but each suffers limitations. Help is on the way.
University at Buffalo researchers are developing a new imaging technique involving nanoparticles suspended in liquid to form "nanojuice" that patients would drink. Upon reaching the small intestine, doctors would strike the nanoparticles with a harmless laser light, providing an unparalleled, non-invasive, real-time view of the organ

Will Nano Vent-Skin Micro-Turbines soon be powering your home?
AZoNano
When we think of turbines, we automatically think of those impressive structures reaching 400 feet in height topped by huge blades spinning endlessly on a vast expanse of flat grassland.
When Agustin Otegui thinks of turbines, he sees something much smaller, a microscopic turbine, in fact. Otegui's concept for providing green power to homes, tunnels or commercial buildings is based on nanotechnology. To understand his Nano Vent-Skin Micro-Turbine concept, a rudimentary understanding of nanotechnology is necessary.
